How long before scroll bars disappear from applications?

never, hopefully. being able to drag the scroll bar rather than scroll down line-by-line is very useful when dealing with long text documents and lists.

wtf? have you never used the scrollbar to quickly scan or jump to a place in a long page/document/list?

Try scrolling through a 1500 line Excel document with a mouse wheel and come back to us.

My mouse software offers the ability to press the scroll wheel and scroll extremely rapidly, similar in fashion to a scroll bar.

that's still not as controlled as using the scrollbar, far from it. you can basically scroll to anyplace instantaneously. really helpful if you know around where is what you are looking for

also, the scrollbar tells you WHERE in the document you are and how long the document is compared to the current windows size (judging from the height of the scroll bar)

True, but the scroll bar still strikes me as a physical tool, rather than a visual aid. It should be more inconspicuous.

I'm so glad you don't work for any software companies and I hope nobody in the software companies think like you.

I think it's pretty discreet as-is. If it were much smaller it could be a pain to click on properly.

just have the movers pack your house when you move. They make it im-fuggin-possible to find a mouse with a scroll wheel.

Hell, I found a serial mouse in one of the boxes, but I'll be damned if I can find my optical MS mouse or Office keyboard...fvckers!!!!

brigden, go to display properties > Appearance tab > Advanced button > select scrollbar from items > lower the size to anything you want.

Problem solved.

You beat me to it. I feel so useless. And slow.
