how long before generic ink debut for new printer?

I got on the Best Buy laptop deal w/free canon MP160 printer last month. But upon searching all the generic ink sites, there isn't one available for that model. I was wondering usually how long it will take for a company to come out with a compatible ink? Also, are all new canon printers chipped? or just the I6600D series?
