How long after eating a meal should you wait to go running? How long is a decent run? 30 mins?

Will it be as effective if you run after you eat? How long should one wait?

Run first, then eat.

Your metabolism will be raised at this point and you will do a better job of processing the food.

but if you insist of eating first, take at least 45min. Food doesn't get digested well that early :D

Depends what you eat really, pasta seems to sit heavily and i have to wait a few hours.
A Decent run would be about 2 miles or 15 minutes.

Yup...run then eat. If you are famished, grab a SMALL snack (ie. granola bar), wait 30 min. then head out. About 30 min every other day is how much I run. On hard days, I run a bit less. On easy days, a bit longer. This keeps me in good shape but won't turn me in to some world class runner.

Once, I made the mistake of eating a bowl of cereal before I ran. I was starving so I had to eat it. I waited 30 min. but that cereal was sloshing in my stomach every step of my run. By the end, I wanted to puke. I've found that running and then eating controls my hunger. I might be fairly hungry before I run, but afterwards I'm hardly hungry at all. When I do eat, it is a smaller portion than I would have eaten before running...thus, keeping the spare tire off. Anyone else experience this??

Well when I run I go running about 8am in the morning. Eat nothing, just drink some water then go running x-country and be back in an hr. Then come back and eat.

When i work out I cook at 3:30pm finish eating at 4pm. Wait 2hrs and hit the gym at 6pm. You should give yourself 2hrs after eating before training. Food is heavy and it depends what you meant by *meal*. If it was a full then 30 minutes is not enough time. 2hrs is better or just run without food and be back. Just make sure you have some water.

A real runner will know for sure. Not my field of knowledge about running......

I avoid eating before I run when I did run.

When I did run it was about 10-15minutes after I got out of bed though. Wake up, get ready, whack on my running shoes and go run be back in 1hr.

I think I've eaten food or a small meal before running, I did not feel good:(.

hmm, i usually eat dinner before i run, i have a busy schedule i guess
i wait two hours then run for 15 min before weights

i find i have MORE energy after a full meal, i can do more than if i've only had lunch and its about 6 hours after when i workout. it dosent bother me that much, but then i run only to get warmup before weights, so only 1.5miles

I have to wait like 3 or 4 hours or my stomach hurts when I run. I usually get a small snack about an hour before - like some fruit or a half powerbar. Seems to work well.

i try my best to avoid food before a workout, but old habits die hard, i like to have a powerbar and a bottle of gatorade about an hour before a run, and then try to use the bathroom (either #1 or #2) before I set out.

Wait at least 2-3 hours after a largish meal before running. I usually eat a Powerbar about 45-60 minutes before a run; that makes me less hungry and gives me more energy. Also, Gatorade is good; electrolytes and all that really do help. As said, its better to eat after you run. And dont forget to stretch after a run!!

For me, a "good" run is 5-10 miles. since I'm guessing you're not a hardcore runner, then of course you don't need to run that far. Maybe 5 miles 3-4 times a week. Might want to do some strength training too.

Also, try doing fartleks. They're great for getting and staying in shape. Link

Someone just explained the whole thing to me recently for a diet/change in lifestyle that I almost started... (and will start when I have enough free time to plan out more meals in advance)... but, if you're trying to lose weight, you don't want extra carbohydrates floating around your system when you're running... Don't eat for 2 hours before you work out or run, if you're trying to lose weight. If you're at your ideal weight, I don't think it matters. I could eat a lot of different foods before going jogging (when I used to be a long distance runner), or before I went for a bike ride... but certain foods made me really sick if I ate them before going out, especially milk. (cereal post above).
