How long after a domain expires before you can register?

A .com domain with the same name as my .org has recently expired (June 27th) and it still hasn't been purged from the domain records at the domain registrars I use. I don't know why it hasn't been removed yet, the domain registration for it expired on the 27th so why is it still kicking around?

I've heard of registrars that will "hold" your domain for a couple weeks after it expires in hopes you still want it, but wouldn't that bump up the expiration date to a couple weeks from now?

No because the expiration date is when the domain will stop working, not when it will be available for registration again. I would give it at least 30 days.

Ah. I would have thought that domain registrars databases would just do a nightly select and removal of all domains with expiration date = today type of thing.

Guess not 🙁

Oh well maybe I'll try one of those backorder things that godaddy rapes you extra money for 😛

Good luck.

In my experience it's usually 45-60 days after the domain expires.

I did the backordering thing from GoDaddy. It's not bad if you really want the domain. If the one you chooses gets renewed, you can select another one to backorder at no additional cost.

Yeah, that's been my experience also.
