How life is left in Socket 478?

I'm probably going to jump the AMD ship soon and go back to Chipzilla with a 2.6C. I am planning on pairing it up with an Abit IS7E.

I understand that there are some new Intel processors on the Horizon. What are the chances that they will continue to be socket 478 and compatible with the IS7 mobo?

Prescott and Tejas CPUs (codenames of the furture Intel CPU's) will also support a new LGA (land grid array) 775 pinout called Socket "T".

xcept the first bunch of prescotts....

the T socket is going to be introduced with the grantsdale chipset, i heard, in q1 2004 (which will feature PCI XPress)

Correct. The first few Prescotts will be socket 478, then it will switch. There may be some overlap as well. The 478 should go to 3.4 GHz, but maybe 3.6 GHz depending on Intel's mood.

So the realistic ceiling of S478 will probably be around 3.6 for a stock CPU?

Will a Prescott work in the newer mobos like an Abit IS7E?

Prescott will work in all current 865(springdale) and 875(canterwood) boards, and yes so far the highest rumored s478 chip will probably be a presscot 3.6, tho they may release a couple more, might depend on how well they can ramp clocks speeds on the new die

They haven't decided/disclosed on that just yet. I get a feeling they are going to give it a new name and ditch the pentium naming system. Pentium 5... that just doesn't sound like the other 4 pentiums, maybe I'm not used to it. Either way, I smell a new name coming up for it...

its like, pentium 10 if you count all the revisions.

revisions doesnt constitute a name change, if they changed the name every revision, then people would be confused, they only change hte name when they completely change architecture, although i would assume Prescott will be called pentium 5 or "pentium 4 xp"

According to this article, the Prescott 3.6 GHz will be the last socket 478 cpu from Intel. It'll be released in Q1 2004. I'm wondering if an 865PE chipset will be the one it is meant to work with. This is important to me because I'll be getting a laptop really soon that uses the 865PE chipset and desktop pentium processors (it's Sager in case anyone is curious). I'm thinking about initially buying it with a Northwood processor in the 2.x GHz range, then upgrading to the Prescott 3.6 GHz later next year once prices drop. With the new 800 MHz fsb, the socket 478 cpu's have migrated from the 845 chipset to the 865/875. I hope there won't be another change like that.

So, will the 865PE be the appropriate chipset for the Prescott 3.6 GHz socket 478 cpu?

Its either that or the 875P, as those are the last chipsets that will be built into socket 478. The Grantsdale will start the transition to Socket 775.

from what i know be sure to get atleast 1 year life on 478.
do anyone not upgrade PC over 1 year?so dont worry and get 1 for you now, by the time you are ready for nect upgrade you will have new LGA cpus and boards in market Q3 or Q4 2004
