How large do IDE HDs get?

I have 3 IDE HDs in my main box: 120gb, 160gb, 200gb.

Also installed is a Samsung H501LJ internal 500 GB SATA running on Silicon Image siI3512 SATA chip, being the embedded SATA controller on the mobo. The mobo is a Gigabyte GA-K8n Pro motherboard.

I'm told that this SATA controller is early and primitive and a likely culprit in crashes I'm getting with the installed MyHD 120 HDTV PCI card (with PCI daughterboard).

So, I'm wondering if I can save the day by getting a large IDE drive to run instead or in addition to the 500GB SATA HD. How big do the IDE drives get and are they economical?
 
You can buy a new sata card and a 1TB drive for less then one ide drive and receive better performance out of it.
 
If you try to do IDE with 500GB, make sure the controller will handle it (ie, is EIDE ATA 133)
 
Why not get a SATA drive and a Sata to IDE converter? I used one for awhile and it worked great. I really don't see a down side to this as the speed should be the same. Newegg has some converters for like $15.

ATA133 does not indicate what size HDD is supports. For years it was an unofficial standard only supported by a couple companies.

Also, 400GB and 500GB IDE drives were common before the push to native SATA.
 
Try not to get too cheap with the IDE to SATA converter. I did once to try and use a fast Samsung F1 SATA in an IDE system and unfortunately the converter only worked at 33MB speed despite saying that it'll run at 133MB/s. Perhaps it was a compatibility thing which I doubt since the desktop was a popular Dell Dimension or it's just plain old cheap. Regardless... if absolute speed isn't too important your money could be better spent on an external USB drive which max out at roughly 33MB/s.

How does this convert? It lets you run an SATA drive on an IDE connection?
 
I've used many PCI SATA disk controllers in both Windows Home Servers (letting older PCs boot to 1 TB SATA disks) and for my business clients for controlling large SATA backup disks.

Frankly, I don't know of anything wrong with Silicon Image 3512 disk controllers, although I don't know that I've ever used that particular model. I've used many PCI controllers with Silicon Image 3112 chips and PCI-E controllers with Silicon Image 3132 controllers, all with zero issues.

Thanks for this info. I'll drop the suspicion of the SATA controller down on my list of things to investigate in trying to resolve this problem. I had no reason to suspect the SATA controller other than the word of the guy who does most of the technical problem solving in the thread for the HDTV card at AVS Forums. Generally I really like the guy and think highly of him. Of course that doesn't mean he's always right!

It's hard to know what to try first but I suppose I should try the zero cost options first, and there are several. I've had this problem for at least a year and a half. Who knows? It could be as simple as reseating a card. I've heard of such things. Or, trying a different PCI slot, that's one thing I've seen mentioned before with issues with a device using a PCI slot. I do have two other motherboards I could try, too (however, this is the best in terms of the quality and speed of the CPU it supports, by far). The problem I'm experiencing is evidently rather rare, so I'm sure there's a solution. I even have an alternative version (newer) of the HDTV card I can and should try. Surely, there's a solution, I just don't know what of the 8-10 ideas I have will be an answer.
