How is working at Home Depot part-time? Any HD employees here?

Home Depot has a great reputation for treating their employees well. I'm currently in college with a little more extra free time than I would like and I think I should get a labor-intensive job. My previous jobs were working at a computer store and working for an Engineering firm. I figure I can learn something by doing some hard work - perhaps, if anything, discipline.

Lately, I've been very into 'projects' - anything that uses power tools. I know what I'm doing when it comes to most things carpentry/painting/flooring.

Has anyone here worked at Home Depot? If so, how was it?

I know a couple of people that work there. Friend of mine got $13 as a checker, but she worked at a market before that. Heard you can make decent money on the "floor" Another guy I knew worked the night shift...refilled the billion nail boxes at 3am...FUN. 😉

Here is my experience at Home Depot:

1. Hired then put through usual brain washing and propaganda
2. You cant work for HD unless you LOVE HD
3. High hopes, secretly higher pay, and high responsibilities
4. 38, 39 hour weeks. Why? Cuz if you were 40 theyd have to give you benefits. F that!
5. 5am sundays... F 5am sundays
6. Hey guys we sure do work a lot and make a lot but we never have any time to spend it.
7. Vacation time? Hahahahhaha
8. Promotion or transfer to sales? (i was a cashier) Hahahahaha
9. Extremely incompetent customers
10. Even dumber supervisors
11. Dont bother making friends, theyll quit or transfer in a month of two.
12. F this im quitting.

Good Job!...you summarized working in retail.

I had a friend that worked there. Pay was like $10 or so an hour i think, but he only stocked inventory.

But they hire and pay more if you have knowledge. If you actually have carpentry knowledge or plumbing knowledge, you'll of course pay more (and it's why i like going there, some of the people there are really knowledgeable).

Well, I do everything myself in my condo (parents bought one with my name on it for college.. I am now the landlord/fix-it dude). I drywall, paint, do electrical work, do plumbing, have laid tile.. One of my proudest projects was putting in my own garbage disposal, GFI outlet under the sink, switch, new 20A fuse in the fusebox, etc.

Ya, I'm pretty crazy into any 'build-it-yourself' project. I wanna start building all my own furniture (except chairs/couches of course). And, I do love Home Depot. I can't think of any other store I get more excited when I walk into. I have pretty much used every type of power tool at some time or other.

I'm pretty excited about applying. Hell.. if I don't get the job at HD, I can get a job at Lowe's. (Though I like HD a lot more) I'm surprised that starting wage is near $10. I'd be happy to make more than $7 an hour (after seeing all my friend's get crappy minimum wage jobs here in this exploited college town.)
