How is Windows2000 for gaming?

I'm running overclocked RDRAM on a P4T-E and although the setup is 90% stable in games, I do get minor memory-related problems. Stuff like 3DMark2001 stopping with a popup box saying a file is corrupted, to illegal ops when installing software. However when I close the popup boxes installation proceeds fine, or I regain use of my desktop. None of the problems cause my system to lock up so I have to reboot. I have a 1.6a up to 2.3 gig right now, with 3000/3000 memory bandwidth, and I hate to drop FSB or memory settings, especially since I rarely get a lockup in games.

I'm pretty sure it's due to the RDRAM running overclocked (over PC900).

Since Win2000 is like NT, I figure it might be more stable and I would get less memory errors. How well does it do in gaming? Will 3DMark2001/2000 run OK with it? Will all the games run on it? Do they run faster or slower than on Win98 or ME?

Win2k is great for games, and it runs all of Madonion's software very well. I would recommend to you that you should set your FSB a little lower, so that if you ran prime95 for a few hours it wouldn't get any errors. I think that having a 100% solid system at a very minimal speed sacrifice ( < 1% ) is a very much better alternative than having an *almost* stable system just to squeeze a few MHz out of the CPU and RAM. For example, my locked Athlon XP 1600+ will run at 145 MHz FSB with the most aggressive RAM timings and everything maxed out 100% stable, but if I even boost it up to 146 MHz its pretty stable, but Prime95 gives me errors, which tells me that my system is not 100%, so I keep it at 145, at least until I get around to unlocking the CPU :)

I have been running Win2k Pro for a few months and it's worked fine with every game I've played. That's a big variety of games from new releases to older '99 type of stuff.

Yap, been running win2000 for at least 3months after upgrading win98se and I must say I didn't lose anything
on the upgrade!
But I did install in FAT32 to allow older games writing in all folders for all users!!

Theres a couple of games that refuse to work on 2k, but other than that, everything works great. And installing on Fat32 or NTFS woulden't matter if you installed the game as an administrator. NTFS is generaly faster, and much more robust than FAT32 ever could dream of being

Provided that the game has an install procedure!! I still play games that don't even know what windows is!!! :)
And I'll keep playing them... even if I have to built a machine that will allow the to run!

If it dosen't even know what windows is...you can tweak the security settings to let all users access the directory. It dosen't need access to all users home directories because it dosen't even know they exist.

Yap, just that I don't like having to do that for all games I install, and some games can't be put under a \games directory where
I could tweak the settings for all access so that child directories and files would inherit those settings.
And there's no sense in doing that in the root directory! Because if we do that where goes the security??
