It sucks. When I had it on my TBird 750/K7 Pro, it literally ripped itself apart at the seams. It worked well for about two days and then I started to get blue screens and failed boot that just got worse as time went on. Eventually I got an error that said: 'error in shell.dll Please reinstall Windows'. So I reinstalled Windows that day - Windows 2000 that is. It is so much more stable and I get good FPS with a GeForce 2 MX in Quake 3 (det 3 drivers). I don't recomment ME at all.

Currently, I am dual booting with WIn2k and Win ME. Both is running fine. Win ME eats up more resoucre than win98, but when you disable System Restore function, you reduce the use of 10% of the system resoucre. Win2k is the more stable OS and Win ME is a slight upgrade from Win98. Win ME looks like Win2k but its win98 hahaha.

I have WinME (to this from Win95) and it rocks. It is smooth, fast, and has some features that are nice. Great help - if that is any help - with diagnosing and troubleshooting paths. Another file view for images. A VERY CLUNKY media player. Basically, WinME is worth about $30 or $40, or whatever doesn't strain your wallet.
From what I've heard, it is Win98, 3rd Ed. It basically adds a lot of automation - system restore, auto update, sjit like that.
It's the latest, but not the greatest.

WinME sux. Gives you less control over your system and eliminates many useful features. Win98se is much better with IE 5.01SP1 and Media Player 6.4, IMHO.

Btw, has anyone heard about a service pack for Win ME? I'd assume M$ is making one and they'd do well to release at shortly after Win ME goes retail.

How in the heck do you disable the restore feature? I have been using it since June and still don't know how to. WinME takes up about 700MB of your HD.

BadDude: To disable WinME's System Restore feature:

Control Panel --> System Properties --> File System Properties --> Advanced Settings --> Trouble Shooting. Put a check mark in the box next to "Disable System Restore."

as far as I am concerned, if you can't get windows 98 to run stable for more then 6 months, then getting Win2K is a must. I personally have ABSOLUTELY NO problems with Windows 98, and I bet I would be fine with WinME (don't need it THAT bad though).

I'm fine with Win98 for now, and will be for a while..

Well to give you an idea:

You can replace mediaplayer 7 with mediaplayer 6.4, in fact MP6.4 is included with WinMe. You just have to dig it up. Just go to C:\program files\windows media player, and run mplayer2.exe and that is wmp6.4/ All you have to do is create the shortcuts, and then unassociate WMP7 and associate 6.4

Also you can delete C:\Windows\Options and free up 153MB. All it is, is a copy of the win9x directory from the CD, it is the install files. If you delete them, it will start asking for the CD or the files when it needs it, but it does free up 153MB.

C:\windows\system\OOBE can go too, its just the MSN install files.

Get the new IE5.5 Advanced security beta, its faster and solved a memory leak. Plus it gives you the ability to delete the cookies with a button next to clearing the cache.

For me the hard drive performance is much better than win98 because Microsoft wrote a good DMA driver for the VIA IDE controllers, and included it in Winme. With win98 you have to rely on the VIA one, which does use DMA but make disk accesses slow to start.

If you have a VIA chipset, load the 4.24 service pack right away.

well it works fine for me =)

I've been paid to wrestle with WinME for a while and found out of course alot of the goods and bads.

Good -- Bad:
Much more stable than 98 -- at the same time eats resources fast.
Better RAM utilization -- requires a beefy chunk of RAM for good performance.
Possibly less crashes (if installed clean and not upgrade) -- no details button to troubleshoot IPFs.
Speedy bootup -- If you ever get caught by the dreaded registry restore at bootup because of a boot corruption, you'll more or likely end up formatting again.
Media Player -- Crappy version 7.0...
Internet Explorer -- Still crappy version 5.5 but runs a bit better on the ME environment than the 98 environment.
Seems like a tad better utilizations for DSL and Cable, etc.

Changes:
Different format of BSOD... bit more complicated but with less chatter.
Designed to look alot like the Win2k.
Add New Hardware is a bit different.
Many many other small changes that's a bit too much to list.

Overall, it's a decent upgrade if you have enough meat in the system to run it smoothly. If you can keep up the tweakings and constant maintenance till compnies provide better hardware drivers for WinME, it's a good consideration.

I've used Linux, BeOS, Win 95, Win 98, Win ME and Win 2000.

Of all these operating systems, Win ME is my least favorite. There is one good thing about it - it boots VERY fast. Other than that, it's horrible in every way.

I have a 350MHz K6-2 with 96MB PC66 SDRAM and a Banshee. Win98 is blisteringly fast in most cases, Win2K runs pretty nice (UT + ICQ + IE + Napster + Winamp [mp3s playing] + folders + ISP banner and no lag) - much better than WinME.

I installed WinME fresh when I did install it. It was horrible! NOT stable, SLOW, and a win2k wannabe! MP3s chopped, IE lagged, the system couldn't handle 1/3 what it could with Win98, etc...

Also, running at a certain memory timing would refuse to boot ME at all, while it was 100% stable with Win98. Strange huh? Well in order to get ME to boot, I had to give up performance! :|

ME sucks, that's my take on it. :p Win2K is much better... It's faster, much more stable, better in every way, and doesn't feel as bloated.

The Restore feature has saved my mom's computer from whatever she hell she does to it more than once. Yeah, it takes up space, but she's never going to use the 8.4 gigs anyway

Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of Win 2k. That said, on my system, I have found to be much faster than Win2k/ntfs. Now, before I go put on my kevlar, let me qualify this by saying that I have not used ME extensively, but I am impressed with its home useability. I wont say that it is best for all you stability freaks out there (like me), but it is stable, much more so that 98 was for me. Yes I do know how to install an OS, I do it for a living. I would like to say that if you are not looking for the security features in 2K, I feel Me would be more than adequate for an everyday user. (How's that for not really giving an opinion? :))

I've been using (a clean install of) WinME for a couple months now, and I love it. The only real thing I don't like about it, is the new media player.

My (cable) download speeds have increased by about 25% over Win98, due to the new TCP/IP stack.
It's never crashed.
Faster all around. Faster boot up.

The only problem that I've had, is that NFS5 won't recognize my V5 anymore. But I imagine that either 3dfx or EA will address that eventually.

I sometimes wonder if the people who knock WinME either didn't do a clean install, or are using some warez version.
