How is Western Digital's RMA sevice?

So my 36gb Raptor failed and I didnt have anything backed up so I lost what was on there. I'll get over that. Does anyone know how fast they are with replacing a drive? Their website says my warrenty is good until 2008. Do you think I will get a current model drive out of this?

thanks for any info.

i did tech support for maxtor for a decent amount of time and learned that 'replacement' drives are simply 'refurbed' . . . unless a very specific/rare occasion arrises and they happen to have none in stock, then you get new.

hard to say, but i'd guess they'd have refurbs for those layin around.

i know most don't like the term refurb, but in some situations, they can actually be a 'better' drive due to using 'new' or 'upgraded' components to replaced the failed/bad ones...where as a *old-new* drive would still be using those same 'defective' components as the one you're replacing.

For me WD has always been quick and painless with RMAs. As long as you're under warranty, you're completely welcome to their junk bin.

I just got my brand new (feb 06) 80gig raptor (they make 80's?!?!) The pt# is WD800.

Its a nice jump from 36gigs. Now I can keep a game or 2 installed.

I have found WD's support and RMA service to be top notch. I RMA'd a 74GB Raptor to them back in January. It took less than a week and a half to get a NEW one back.

That would suck if you got two 36GBs in Raid 0 like I do. One fails, they send you a bigger drive because they dont have any more 36GBs, now you can't do raid. :frown:

Their RMA process is very efficient IMHO.

I think they'll even ship the replacement before you return the old drive if you provide a cc number.

true. that would suck.

how do they run in raid??

When my Raptor went bad, it was about a 2 week turnaround time from sending in the old one to getting a new one. Going by the packaging at least, they seemed to have sent me a new drive instead of a refurb.

For the record, what happened with my Raptor was that I had severe corrosion where the SATA cable was plugged in. Corrosion filled every single gap there. I don't live in a high humidity area, and I've never had that problem with any drive before or since. The Raptors are the only SATA drives I've ever owned, so I'll admit I'm less than an expert when it comes to how often/likely corrosion will occur in relation to a data cable port.

I dont know what happened to mine. All of a sudden little balloons popped up warning me of corrupted files. The next day nothing was readable. I brought it to work and plugged it in and tested it with WD's diag program and it failed most of the tests. I forgot about the 5 year warrenty and was so happy when I found out it was still covered.

I think all my drives from now on will be WD.
