I used to have WaMu, switch to BofA due to less available Atms locally. I like BofA so far, definitely recommend, they have a pretty good online banking system.

I banked at Washington Mutual for a couple of years. They don't offer any fees for checking accounts. I had problems with them in the beginning where they froze my account based on their own errors. I had to prove I was who I was, then I could access my own damn money. It was a headache and they weren't that urgent about it.

Use Bank of America now.

I use BECU, primarily, but I also have accounts with BofA (for easy access and a huge credit line) and with USAA (for my brokerage acct and savings).

I worked for HSBC and I'm going to be straight with you. If you want just a checking account and a standard savings account, go with WaMu. HSBC is better for people who are reasonably new to the banking market (aka good mortgage rates, Home Equity Loans etc. so they can get all of your banking at once) or also for people who have $15,000 or more...then you get a lot of fees reversed and you also get better rates on most every savings/investment product.

wamu's free checking account is nice in the sense that you get no frills, no fees, no minimum balance on your account, a visa logo for the online purchases, and free atm usage. it's good if you're poor. if you got lots of money, i heard interest rates are higher in other banks, as well as service and other things.

HSBC owns Household Bank, and the level of sh!ttiness in Household is so high it contaminates the entire organization.

Use WAMU.

All banks stink...but Soveriegn Banl has this thing where if you wait for a teller for more than 5 minutes, they put $5 is your account. I have made about $30 off that deal so far.

interest rates on a checking account ? EDIT>> Maybe you meant for their other accounts. I'm still not understanding the poor reference though... why would someone want to pay for a checking account these days ?

I use Wamu for free checking (they're fine for a simple checking account - what more are you planning to do with it?) and ING for savings...
