Pretty bad in and around Santa Barbara, since the roads are narrow and archaeic. Aside from that, there aren't very many traffic spots since every town is small and separated from each other.

There will be some traffic during rush hours going thru Carpinteria (both directions)..... the narrow 101 there is the bottleneck.

no traffic locally, except

the paradise on earth that is Santa Barbara / Goleta / Montecito is very expensive to live in. It's among the most expensive in the USA.

So lots of people who work here can't afford to live locally, & they commute from Buellton, Lompoc, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria to the north, and from Ventura to the east/south. At rush hour commuters choke the 101 freeway to the south for about 1 hour. Not so bad on the 101 toward the north.

Traffic on the 101 freeway is also real choked in/out to the south on the weekends & holidays, because of all the people who flee LA & OC to come here for weekend getaways. Lots of foreign vacationers here too.

Very hard to find jobs here, because of the perpetual pressure of people from LA & San Francisco & elsewhere who are always trying to find some way to live here. Plus the graduates pouring out of UCSB & several other local colleges try like heck to find jobs here so they can stay.

Lots of the famous big corporations were founded here, then moved out. Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Kinkos, lots & lots more. Biggest local employers are Raytheon, UCSB, Cottage Hospital, Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Ocean, islands, unspoiled pristine mountains, excellent airport, very high culture, wonderful place. Lots of hollywood celebrities, famous authors, sports stars and wealthy business tycoons live here in their mansions beside the babbling creeks amidst the oaks & sycamores, viewing the mountains & ocean.

If you're talking about the 101 (which is what you'd have to be talking about unless you mean the local roads), then it's not a big deal except at rush hours... and even then it's nothing compared to LA and Orange counties.

The bottle neck is right there as you're coming in to Santa Barbara from the south or leaving soutbound. Friday afternoon and Sunday afternoon are the worst. Other than that, it's not a big thing.

Oh, and if it's graduation weekend, don't bother trying to come/go to Santa Barbara. It took my sisters about 4 hours to get from Santa Barbara to Ventura on graduation weekend a few years ago.

Hi i might get a job in San Luis Obispo (not making alot 40k) so i thought i might find a place in Santa Maria. I hope Santa Maria is a decent place to live.

And from your comments I think the commute from Santa Maria to San Luis Obispo wont be bad at all. Thanks a lot.

Santa Maria is at the very northern border of SB County. Not much in the way of major traffic problems in that area. There's lot of new track homes in the area but be prepared for sticker shock if you're thinking about buying, esp. if you're from outside CA. North County tends conservative, South County tends liberal. Overall, you can do a lot worse than Santa Maria.

Well it'd be completely unnecessary to commute from SLO down to Santa Maria, about a 30-min drive on the 101 freeway.

If you'll be working in SLO, forget Santa Maria.

Just live in SLO, or if possible in Los Osos a short drive west of SLO, on the beach at the south rim of Morrow Bay. You should find good places to live all over SLO, in Arroyo Grande to the south, or a slightly longer drive but W A Y cheaper 15 minutes up the steep grade to the north in Atascadero. Atascadero would probably be less expensive, and a nicer environment, than Santa Maria.

SLOwtown
another SLO
Los Osos, primo spot near SLO

Edit: What's the general type of work you might get in SLO?

Yeah, as Scott said there's really no point to commuting from Santa Maria. There is little to no traffic within 70miles of SLO so that's a non-issue. You should be able to find housing for a similar price in AG (Arroyo Grande) and Atascadero, but are 15min closer. AG is much closer to the coast (Pismo is across the 101) than Atascadero, though. Prices for a bedroom in a house/apt go from $450-600 in SLO, and $350-600 in the surrounding cities.

SLO is a great place to live - close, beautiful beaches, lots of access to outdoors, good fishing, great bike/motocycle riding - but it is a college town without much industry, so it tends to cater to the under 22 crowd. There isn't very much out here for the young professional. It seems, though, that you're from South Dakota, so it probably won't take much to impress you.

oops i need to change my profile. i am living with family in irvine ca. and i dont really care about young professional life. well im not too old (30) but i am married and wanted to find a good place to work and have a family.

ok this is great i really need opinions from locals here. i am thinking about buying a condo. i can probably afford 250k. my concern is if i get something in slo versus santa maria which will be easier to sell? Since, i will only be working there for 3 years or so.
