How is this possible?

Talking about Zalman CNPS8700 vs CNPS7500. These are simply revised version of 7000/7700 series for newer sockets and universal mounting system. (7000=92mm fan, 7700=120mm fan, 7500=110mm fan) It looks like the difference is seemingly the existence of heat pipes.

CNPS7500: 848g
CNPS8700: 475g

My question is, how come the 7500 weighs double as 8700? If anything I would think the 8700 was heavier.

Just an educated guess...

Copper is getting mad expensive!

Crooks around here are stealing it off the street lights and trading it for drugs...

Maybe they don't have any street light wiring left in Korea! 😀

The 7000 has that huge copper core that the radial fins branch off of.

The 8700 has just the base, and no huge core because it has heatpipes to do the dirty work.

Yup, PCTC has it. There is a lot more copper in the 7000 and copper is considerably higher density than aluminum. Check the view from the top of the light one in the review - there is almost nothing in the center. The heat pipes can replace lots of expensive copper.
