How is this kind of art created?

Somone selected bluye and white in photoshop, drew a line, and randomly applied 300 filters to it.

Sorry, I'm not a real big fan of the photoshopped "abstract desktop wallpaper" type of artwork.. why do they always have to put something like the word "disillusioned" or "dynamics" or "biostructure" or some other stupid "cool sounding" word on that stuff, even when it has no relevance to the image at all.

that pisses me off, too.
but you can tell when someone actually knows what they are doing compared to a filter-job.
i have the same problem with going into a coffee shop and hearing some open-mic-night chord monkey!

This is primarily 3ds max, and the 2D and final effects in photoshop. Given a week, 3ds max, and an any books you wanted on the subject, I doubt any of you could make anything that even came close to it. This kind of stuff really is skillfully made.

Deviantart has a bunch of them. http://www.deviantart.com/ Search for wallpapers with your resolution, 60 per page. You'll see a bunch. Here is the search with all the settings already set etc

Edit: whoops, didn't mean it to sound inflamatory. I'm just saying that making this really does take a lot of skill and time, and it is NOT just a bunch of photoshop filters.

I agree, but this one actually looks really good.

you honestly don't think most of the people here could make something like that after putting in a little effort? this is a forum of dorks who shamelessly brag about their self-made computers which they call "rigs".. i believe they could learn to make an image like this. such art, if that's actually what you want to call this, is all over the internet. it might require some skill to make, but there's no creativity in it. it means nothing. it looks kinda cool, but isn't all that impressive. any nerd with spare time and photoshop can learn to make stuff like this.

I totally agree with you but I'm curious on how the hell they made it. What sort of plug-in's?

3Ds max with a mix of geometry and particle effects plus photoshop post render editing. It's been a while since I last used 3D max, it sucked cause: the more i knew the cooler stuff i made got, that also meant tha i needed more time to make and render the cool stuff, so I had less time for school :/

But it was alot of fun and I still have some skillz, but don't have the time to use them that often.

Lol, you took the words right out of my mouth. While they look cool, these pictures really lack in the creativity and originality department. And Biostructure Luminescence and so forth bugs the sh!t out of me as well.

Agreed.

It's way more fun burning stuff with my DPSS laser. :)

it looks like photoshop and some 3d rendering tool, most likely 3dstudio max or maya.

Well you may not be so anxious after seeing the price tag. The 2W laser pictured cost about $24,000. It's also quite dangerous and definitely not recommended to individuals with little or no former laser training!

For beginners, I recommend a 5 mW DPSS (532 nm green) pointer. They can be had for under $100 if you look. There's a lot of them on ebay.
