How is this for irony for my AGP X800xt

I have a Dell 4600 P4 2.4 with a 9800pro and have been waiting patiently for months to get a AGP X800 XT at a decent price. I have two orders currently at Dell on backorder for a MSI X800xt PE for $326 each that appear to be in limbo.

So Monday night I see the thread in hot deals about Microcenter having the Visiontek Xtasy X800 XT for $399 and I pulled the trigger. If the Dell ones ever ship I could sell them on Ebay for nice profit that could pay for the card itself. So the card ships out Tuesday right before they take video card deal off the Microcenter website.

The card arrived on Wednesday by FedEx but it is at my parent?s house so I cannot play with it until Saturday when I pick it up. Then I got concerned yesterday about the power supply in my Dell 4600 handling the card so I posted a question on this board. (Thanks again to those that replied) I searched the Dell forums as someone suggested and found I out that the card can be used. End of story right? Nope

This morning I see a hot deal for a Dell 8400 (3.2Ghz, 1gig ram, 17LCD) with a $200 rebate, a $99 rebate (for shipping) and it was combining with the Delf 20% off $899 coupon which was supposed to expire last night. I also have a $100 concession coupon that I can use on this order. I quickly ran some numbers, pulled the trigger and when the dust settles I get this:

$879.20 (8400 system)
-$200 rebate
- $99 rebate
-$350 Selling Dell 4600 to my brother
-$200 Monitor (EBay Buy it now price + shipping I will set up)

$30.20 Final cost.

A sweet deal but the kicker? A Dell 8400 is PCIe based and I have an unopened Visiontek AGP X800 XT waiting at my parent?s house. So I will have to sell it on Ebay for a profit and start the hunt all over again for a PCIe X800 XT??.sigh 🙁 I am happy and sad at the same time which is a weird feeling.

Even after selling your old comp, you could get such a better comp for your money by building it yourself. What is your fixation with dell?

Yeah, he could build a much better system, but it'll cost a lot more. He'd spend more on the motherboard alone then on his whole computer that he's getting, which is no slouch.

I doubt he'll have any problem with gaming on it as he'll be able to buy a lot more games than if he spent a ton of money on hardware.

OnEMoReTrY, Look how much is out of my pocket for this PC when the dust settles and a little labor of shipping a monitor and video card. $32.20 for a completely solid state of the art PC.

The Dell 4600 I got as a steal as well in October 2003 for $160 from another Dell mistake. Granted I put more ram, better hard drives and a nice sound card in there that my brother will inherit but all those components were from hot deals as well. He is not getting the 9800pro though; I am switching him to a Visiontek TI4400 since he does not play hard core games.

I did build my own machine in 2002 but when all was said and done it cost a pretty penny even with some of the components coming from hot deals. I am not a big tweaker and the Dell 8400 will suit my needs fine with a X800 XT for some time to come. As long as Dell continues to make mistakes I will continue to upgrade for a fraction of the cost. Granted, it may not have a kickass board or fancy case but it is fine for me.

It is going to be hard seeing the AGP X800 XT all nicely shrink wrapped when I pick it up and cannot open it. Sigh

How can you possible say that. He just paid $30 for a very nice computer and you think he could do better? WTF are you smoking.

Thanks but I called Dell this evening and upgraded to the PCIe X800 xt for another $312. I had a really cool rep on the other end. They do exist at Dell, just a matter of when to call. They gave me the 20% off since I had used a coupon for the entire order.

Wow so all that for under $350. Way to beat the system man. And I thought getting compusa to pricematch a 25% off PNY video cards from Best Buy to get 25% off a 6800gt was beating the system (Best Buy doesnt carry PNY 6800gt's)

No doubt, nice rig for $350... What are the complete specs (HD, RAM, etc) and what does it come with?

edit: nevermind...

Did a bit of poking around... Really nice deal. The P4 540 alone goes for $215 at newegg, and 1 GB of decent RAM would run you at least $150 (Dell used Crucial/Micron RAM in my rig at work). Throw throw that X800 XT in the mix and the rest of the system is gravy. Granted, your out of pocket cost is still $893, and you didn't get the parts you are selling for free, but still some interesting work there.
