How is this computer for a Linux firewall server?

1.4Ghz Duron
Gigabyte "I Forgot The Model" Motherboard with KT266A
256MB Kingston DDR
10GB 4.2K Western Digital HDD
3 Linksys or 3Com NICs

It will be firewalling three "zones". WAN, LAN and WiFi which will plug into one of the NICs.

Suggestions?

Too fast :)
I think it's fine, and should work like a breeze. People use Pentium 1 machines for firewalls for a single zone/lan with success, so you shouldn't have any problem with that machine. What kind of vid card are you using? If it's a old one, then you should be fine. That is if you are going to actually use the vid card on it. (SSH is great :) )

Do you mean the SSH protocol or something else? And I don't have an option for a slower computer. That's the slowest I can get. Besides, I plan to underclock it so I can try to run it cooler since the case is awful.

I got smoothwall running perfect on a P 233mmx w/ 32 ram, that computer would be overkill for a firewall, but if ya got nothing else to do with it then why not...

Wayyy too fast. If you're buying parts for it, tone it down, if its somthing you have hanging around, it'll work fine.

What I did when I was making my firewall/router was round up a system for around $300 based off of a via C3 800mhz and a MicroATX case. I didn't have an older crappy system laying around to work with, so I had to buy parts. Mine's also overkill, but with the option of pulling out the C3, replacing with a P3 and then having a decently usable system later down the road.

That's a desktop, not a firewall.
Mandrake MNF runs great on a celeron 500 w/ 128MB, and it's a hog as far as firewalls go.
Give that Duron box a monitor and pick up a real POS at a computer show, retrobox.com, etc.

For most linux firewalls, a P166 w/ 32MB RAM is enough for a few dozen clients.

Stop ragging on me people that's the slowest (for the cheapest) I can get. :) Plus this way maybe I can also have a competent system to mess around with Linux on...

Check my rig link in the sig for the setup. (look for gtva_command)

I really like smothwall, since thats what I'm running. Good distro :)

The hard drive is super overkill, but I had a 40GB laptop drive laying around, and getting an adapter for it was cheaper than a new drive...so I went with that :)
