Per an earlier thread - I wnat to replay my opteron 165/dfi motherboard with a new motherboard due to issues.

I'm thinking of Gigabyte GA-P35-DSL (L not P) (I have an x-fi xterme and do not use raid)
E8400
and 2gb of gskill 1066
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16820231144)
--
The current video card is 8800GTS (512mb).
--
The idea is to just swap the motherboard and NOT reinstall windows xp (not sure if this will work)
--
Is this a reasonable combo or will there be heat issues or is there a better MB?

Personaly I would rather get Kingmax 1066, they should be around 22 bucks for 1gb, work at default 1.8v instead of at least 2.0v that gskills need, 44412 without anything and it may be possible to overclock them even to 1200mhz. There are also known as most compatible memory on market, at least here in Poland :p
Also if you would get DS3R it has native support for AHCI in XP, but well since you dont even need raid then you can force AHCI on DS3L too by modifying drivers (just changing single string I think).

Doesn't the e8400 need DDR2 667 ram? Thats what I thought since it runs at 1333 fsb

Hum I'm not sure anymore about the e8400 and the multiplier - the chip has an FSB of 1333. Is the multiplier 1/2 ?

Is AHICI a big deal? From the wiki it doesn't seem like it would be an issue. I should look into the kingston memory (do you know which model?).

The reason I favor the DSL board is that it is $50 less than the version with raid (not a big deal but the above components combined come to $280). I've also been considering the Q6600 but it seems like the E8400 is the better bet...

Will XP whine when I switch motherboards ?

Any other comments or advice before I pull the plug? Can I use slower memory? Would I be better off with a mb that has heat pipe or does this one run cool enough? Would I be better off with Q6600 (which is about the same price?) (This is strickly a game system - turn it on play games turn it off - well and occasionally photo editing - I use my linux system for everything else and store important data on it).

Ok. Would your system with stock cooler run cool enough or do you require the AC Freezer 7 pro to support 3.6ghz (which seems like marginal over clocking).

About your not re-installing XP question..I recently installed this mobo using XP Home..my previous mobo was a Via chipset unit..all I did was delete the Via mobo drivers..all of them.. in control panel, went into the registry and deleted all the Via entries that I could find using the search/find function. Shut her down, then installed the DS3L..I had previously downloaded all the latest drivers from the Gigabyte site for the DS3L, on the initial boot up I noted a hard drive light problem that was fixed after the boot sequence..XP did the deed and found all my hardware..when my sys stopped thrashing and was stable..I installed the Gigabyte drivers and all was fine. Go for it.

ok that's good news - just have to wait for my favorite vendor to get the board back in stock...
