My father in-law wants to be able to use his lap top in a few different spots all within 40 feet or so and as he is a very basic user would trendnet be a decent choice. I will set it up for him with wap but security is not a large concern as his nearest neighbor is ~1/2 mile away and it is ~1/4 mile to the nearest road. I was just looking for decent reliability and I would be getting this for him for Christmas, suggestions welcome

Oh yea; he has cox cable I think 768/128 or whatever their slowest service is. Running XPsp3 on a Vostro laptop with the Dell built in wifi card whatever was the least expensive I will bet.

Should be OK for basic use.

In any case $12 after rebate, what is there to lose? A dinner in Calories, and Cholosterol Joint ;).

Thanks Jack, he only uses it for e-mail with an occasional attached picture or two and a couple news related web sites.

Everyone in my family has a WRT54GL with DDWRT on it (8 total), I told them to give me $50 and I'd program it for them. May not be the cheapest but in the over year now, not one of them has ever had to power cycle their router because it locked up, contrary to other routers. We opted for stability over cost.

That implies that everything else less expensive without DD-WRT is Not stable.

Which is Not the case, a lot of the "Cheapos are stable when Humbly used.

A small nice car can be stable too; One does not needs a Hummer if One is Not driving under harsh conditions.

From what I have seen in reading about it there is no advantage at all to DD-WRT for him. I mean it is unlikely that he uses 1gig/month and he only turns his computer on 3-4 days a week tops for maybe an hour at a time. Seemed silly and a waste to spend much money or effort on a router.

I didn't imply that anything without DDWRT is not stable but I also got tired of the calls from all of them saying their internet kept going down with their sub $50 routers (at that time they were more expensive than they are now) so I had them get DDWRT capable routers to see if it was indeed internet or the router, haven't heard a peep from them since. I'm sure there are stable cheaper routers but in my experience, I haven't seen any. This was also a year ago so hopefully things have gotten better. As far as usage, my family is the typical family that has internet usage under 1, maybe 2gb's per month if that. They use computers sparingly but if it doesn't work when they need it, they aren't very happy. I have no experience with trendnet routers, the non DDWRT router I've had was a linksys and dlink. My linksys was junk but my dlink was very stable.
