My friend just ordered the GC69 and plans to use it with a Althon XP 2400+ and Abit NF7-S. Does anyone have any experience with this HSF or the GC68, how is it? Will he be able to run the CPU at 200FSB (lowered multiplier of course, some where around 12.5-11.5)?

It should depend on the CFM capability of the fan that's being used on it as to wether that HS will cut it or not.

It should handle it well enough, after all the CPU is rated for like 85c-90c so there should be some headroom.

I would say either of those coolers would be pushing it considering you are talking 2300MHz-2500MHz on a CPU that does 2000MHz at default. Unless the 2400+ got a significant improvement in stepping and frequency headroom, I wouldn't expect much more than what the 2100+'s are doing (they seem to be the exact same stepping and batch binned higher), which is 2300-2500MHz with top of the line cooling.

A Higher CFM fan will help, but the base still needs to transfer and dissipate heat effectively. I found going from a very good cooler, a Pal 8045, to one of the best Socket A coolers, a Thermalright SLK-800, dropped my baseline core temps by 3-5C idle/load. The GC69 is an excellent entry level cooler that will do stock speeds no sweat and give you some OC'ing headroom, but its always that last 100-200MHz that requires the best cooling with air. I'd say 2100-2200MHz (since you won't need to increase Vcore as much) should be attainable with that cooler tho without freaking you out with high temps.

How about the use of this cooler for a 1700+ "B" TBRED cpu. I plan on overclocking but do these cpu's usually reguire much voltage bump? Thanks and please lmk

I tried this HSF for a cheap box for a friend. paired it with a newegg 1700+ B-bred that I wasn't planning on OCing too much.

Its a good value, I guess, but you basically get what you pay for.

It came simply stuffed into a cardboard box. No sleeve, no protective plastic on the CPU contact area, no nothing. Its an all aluminum HS that is of fair construction. Its solid. The cpu surface are is basically not finished. It is very rough and ground. By far the worst I have ever come accross (tho my experience is with Pal 8048, swifty's, thermalrights and the better volcanoes, not exaclty low end stuff). I would recomend lapping (a tall order), but I was too lazy. I just went heavy with the AS2 and was done with it. The fan is fine. I'm happy with the performance, temps seem decent, definately better than a stock retail HSF with the putty.
