How is the onboard sound on the EPOX 8KHA+?

I had an Iwill KK-266 and the sound was pretty good. I'm wondering how good the sound is on this board. I don't need anything fancy since I have to use headphones. I just want to know about the basic sound quality.

It SUCKS, to be completely truthful.

I just bought an Audigy cos I couldn't stand it anymore. (Well, and because I gave away my Live!, d'oh.)

It has exactly four volume settings - silent, barely audible, too loud for nighttime, and loud.

Depending in the speed of your CPU and how much ram, you should have no issues. I have an 8k7a and use onboard sound right now and have no problems. That was with 512 ram and a Tbird 1.4 266. I had to put my old 1.2 200 in for a bit and had sound issues. So if you dont have that beefy of a system, get a card. If you have plenty of muscle, give it a shot.

I'm putting in an XP1700 with 256MB DDR.

Is this sound card hardware accelerated or is this some sort of soft soundcard that is on the MB. I'm wondering because I'm not sure whether or not to put my SB Live in the MB.

AC97 codec on-board sound is equivalent to the ESS1868 chipset sound.

I had the ESS1868 on my old P90 system and if the AC97 codec is the same then u r really are better off getting a different card cos its crap.

The simple fact is the SB Live will sound much better and put less load on the CPU so your gaming performance will be better then if you use the onboard sound.
