How is the Nvidia 5200 chipset?

I have an ATI Radeon 64mb DDR VIVO and I want to upgrade to a newer card (hopefully one that will work with my nForce2 chipset on my motherboard a little better). I see that a lot of the Nvidia 5200 chipset cards are pretty affordable. How are they in performance and quality? Would this be a decent upgrade from the card I had?

Is a very bad chip, DON'T BUY IT!. If you want a good cheap upgrade buy a NVidia 4200Ti 128mb for $100 or so, but don't even consider that 5200 chip.

it would be a decent upgrade only cause the card you currently have is getting very dated... I'd say maybe try and spring for a 9600 or something instead if you can swing it... or maybe even an FX5600 chipset.
the 5200 chipset is kinda just the bargain chipset of the line.

its not that bad of a chip. it pwnz a geforce2 Ultra and it would definatly be way better than his radeon DDR. and with his old mobo/ram/cpu, it would match it decenlty, but i would urge you to extend your budjet and get a 4200

Yeah but I don't see the point of getting a fx5200 when you can get a ti4200 for a few dollars more. So that kind of puts the fx5200's price/performance ratio all out of wack.

LOL. Note take, the 5200 sucks. Okay, since I need a card ASAP, I checked out the prices of cards at a local computer shop. I am considering two cards:


Gigabyte Radeon 9200 128mb (8X AGP) for $90


Chaintech Ti 4200 128mb (8X AGP) for $116


Which card should I get?

the 4200 would CRUSH the 9200, the 9200 is a 9000 n0n pro with 8x agp support. i would think that it is on the same level as a 5200, so get the 4200 without a doubt, hands down if those are your only two choices

You get what you pay for, i.e. you buy a low end/cheap GFX card expect performance to match the price.

That statement "you get what you pay for" is completey wrong. When you have card companies selling things such as the low performing 9800se's for nearly as much as a 9800np you are defitely not getting what you pay for. Same thing with the fx5200 ultra, when this card came out it was selling for around $200, a ti4200 could be had for less and would perform better. Sorry but that saying just annoys me, too much of the time it does not hold true.

once again, ti4200 would be much preferable to the fx5200 (ultra or not).

I own a 5200 Ultra. Got it for $75. I think it was worth the money. The non-ultra's are pretty weak, but the Ultra isn't bad. Not as fast as a 4200 on most things though. But, even though I can't really touch the 4200 in 3dMark 2001, it's still not a bad card. At first I thought it was pretty poor, but the more I game with it, the happier I am with it.

Of course, it was an upgrade from a Geforce2MX 400, sooo... Who knows.

Seems like Ti 4200 is the way to go. I got the local computer shop to give me the Chaintech GeForce 4 Ti4200 128mb card for $109.

Not too bad, you'll notice a nice boost from your old card, now just make sure those ATI drivers get properly cleaned out.

I agree with you about the 5200 ultra not being too bad but it still loses to the 4200. Maybe prices are different in the US but here in the UK the 4200 is usually cheaper than any 5200 ultra which makes it kinda pointless when it's slower.
