How is the cost of living in Los Angeles?

I want to go to UCLA to major in Music history/theory. I was just wondering what is the cost of living in Los Angeles. I am aware in other parts of CA it's expensive, but I want to know about LA.

Thanks.

I'm not sure. I'm really not familiar with LA. The reason I chose UCLA is because they offer a great program for musicology.

QFT. Anywhere on the west side is going to be expensive or very undesireable. Face it, anywhere you might actually want to live will be expensive.

In some regards its not that bad... a dollar menu mcdonalds burger is still a dollar. Milk is about $2.50 or so... bread is $3 .. etc

But a two bedroom apartment will run 1700-2100+ A one bedroom is 1400+

UCLA housing is expensive too, 10000+ for 9 months. BUT, there are ways to get it for free if you dont have much money. PM me if you want more info. I know a LOT about UCLA.

south and east LA is good =)

Its funny, a friend of mine lives in East LA, and when i was talking to him online he was like "brb in a sec, i need to run to the corner to the liqour store" he was litterally back in a minute and he told me theres one on ever corner

Dang thats pricey. reason I was asking is because in Texas its rather cheap. My cousin has a 2 bedroom apartment, which is actually fairly large and is paying about 780 a month.

I actually wont be going there yet though. I won't be till around the summer maybe, so I can save up more money.

But if I have any questions, then for sure I will send you a PM.

Cost of living in Westwood near UCLA is high but worth it, IMO. Westwood village is great and Hollywood is not far away.

UCLA does have a very solid Musicology program...but how will you pay off your student loans? Not a lot of jobs for musicologists around these days...

If you have a scholarship, then UCLA isn't too bad. You can live in Westwood, share and apartment at approx $600 a month and save on gas/travel time or live in Culver City or Mar Vista for less and spend more on gas/travel time.

You can live fairly comfortably on ~$1000/mo.

If you don't have a scholarship, Out of State tuition is a killer. 🙁

Edit: 😀 Whitecloak, beat me to it.

I may have to think things off then. But in Texas, there are some available jobs. I'd like to teach music history in High school.

rahul: helo thar! 😉 I don't have a scholarship. 🙁 Maybe I should try to find a University in Texas that offers a good musicology program.

Reason I chose UCLA is because I heard it was great. And according to some career sites I visited, it's recommended. But, it now may be out of the question. 🙁

Before you make a decision, I'd recommend getting in touch with students in the program via the departmental student affairs office and asking them about their experiences. Out of State students in particular. UCLA is a great school and LA is a great place to be. It'd be a shame to give up so soon. 🙂

I went to UCLA, it sux. Possibly the most overrated school on Earth. Westwood COL is HIGHHH. Higher than the potheads that go there. Forgot to tell you Westwood has the WORST traffic on the planet. During rush hour it takes you 30 minutes to get out of or in to campus.

Oh. didn't know. Hmm, maybe I should visit LA for the summer to check it out.

jeebus, your out of state tuition is going to be nuts.

anyways, cost of living is high. are you a transfer or a freshman? if you're a freshman, live in the dorms for sure. if you're a transfer, i think they offer at least one year of housing - if you're not high on dorm life, you can try to get into the university apartments.

<-- UCLA, c/o 2003 but i was a political science major.
