Compton is only bad if you get lost there at night. During the day you should be fine, as long as you know where you're going.
There are much, much worse areas you could be stuck in. At least the part of compton w/ the K-Mart is residential / commercial.
If you had to drive through the industrial section, I'd be worried.

The only part of LA you should be REALLY worried about is the Rampart district downtown.

Blindman Coming Home From K-Mart (Screen Shot from THE GAME!)

South Central L.A. is the spookiest. I drove through the intersection of Florence and Normandie about 6 mos. after the race riots. OMFG! That place looked like the fskn? Moon! I have a very large gun in my car and would not have hesitated to empty the clip into anything that looked like it was coming up to my car. Cats, Dogs, and paperboys included!

That's still in the ghetto. Maybe not as bad as Compton, but I wouldn't take a ride down there.

I was born in Lynwood and lived in Compton.. about 45 years ago. To say things have changed is a gross understatement. Actuyally I was a baby so I don't rmember. All I know is what my folks,Aunts and Uncles have told me. In fact my Grand Parents on both sides were neighbors there for 35 years..a long long time ago when that area was predominantly white.

Nothing will happen to you if you go during the day. Contrary to the opinion here, Compton is not full of crazy, gang members who shoot white people on sight.

That said, it would be a very bad idea to go there at night.

Your best bet is to drive an armored car - with super dark windows.....

And don't park in the lot - drive it straight through the front of the store, and push the things you want home.

Just don't get out.

BTW - I doubt you'd be able to find anything good - even the substandard crack that was on clearance is long gone.

I've taken a couple wrong turns into Compton once...nothing worse than the poorer parts of Oakland or Los Angeles...

i've heard compton isnt as bad as the south central area, i mean they are both bad but south central is definitely worse.. cities like inglewood and others around arent as bad i'd say. i really dont think its worth it to go to a closing down k mart there , it'd be intimidating. when i was learning how to drive actually my driving instructor had me drive to south central so he could go to a certain chicken restaurant. That was like 4 years ago, and there were still burned out buildings from the riots. anyways, i waited in the car when he went in there to order, and like 8 crips walked by wearing all powerder blue jackets and bandanas. Anyways, expect to see that type of thing there.

interesting fact. kevin costner was born in lynwood which is basically compton. compton / lynwood used to be a middle class white suburb in the 50s i guess.

Like I said, many cities have a bad rep when there are MUCH worse places you could be stuck.

Rampart district near downtown LA is easily one of the "hardest" neighborhoods. The areas surrounding the sulfur mines on Anaheim street between wilmington/long beach hold the highest murder rate in the county last I heard.

if you actually went to the crap part of LA, got out of your car and walked 3 city blocks what do you think your % chance of living would be (at night time)

After seeing movies like Training Day all of LA looks bad to me ;)
I love living here in Montreal, although its probably the most dangerous Canadian city its nothing compared to any american city in terms of danger. Name me the safest LA neighbourhood (that's not composed of rich bastards) and that'd probably be the most dangerous over here.

Tough question. It would depend on if you are armed, what clothing you have on and just how lucky you are. I'm just guessing, but if you walk three blocks, in an area that is populated with local boyz, and you're white, with a Barney suit on, and you're screaming sh1t at the locals, I would guess you would have about a 25% chance of getting blown away for kicks.
