how is the build looking

Well after posting the same info in the wrong forum I found all this wealth of information here for a build. Budget is right around 1k with shipping and the OS. Use of the rig will be for some games (Delta Force, COD4 etc), for pictures, watching internet videos(no not those)/browsing and music. I'm also looking for some longevity at least 4 yrs--5yrs max. Windows XP for sure. Also looking for stability and quality--not planning to overclock, but thinking about it for all the beneficial reasons.

Here are the definites:
PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817139004

Mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813136043

HDD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16822148140

HSF
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835118223

Now for the trouble makers
CPU for right now is the Q6600 (like 70/30), but looking into the E8400--though I'm hearing that for longevity use the quad core. Still not sure. Also thinking about the E6750.

Memory thinking these two options
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820227231
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231098
Just confused about the latency and compatibility with the mobo--plus which is better.

GPU

I'm pretty sure about this one, but still open to suggestions.

Plus a LITE ON DVD burner with lightscribe and SATA, a Rosewill card reader, and stated earlier Windows XP home. Monitor, keyboard etc is already in use.

Thanks in advance.

A couple things I would point out.

PSU - Not a bad choice at all, but the 520HX version, which has modular cabling, is just about the same price at buy.com.
http://www.buy.com/prod/corsai...loc/101/203270716.html

That Seagate drive is a generation old. The 7200.11 drives are out, if that sort of thing matters to you.

If you're looking for the computer to last 4-5 years, get 2x2GB of RAM instead of 2x1GB. If you do go 2x1, that OCZ is overpriced. Don't spend more than $20-25 per gig as a rule of thumb right now.

HSF - There are better coolers for the money, like the Tuniq Tower. If you aren't planning to overclock though, there's not a lot of sense in a $45 cooler.

Videocard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814127329 same price as the 9600gt, but no The Witcher game. It's considerably faster though.

PSU: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/...p?ProductCode=10006237 More power then the 550vx, cheaper, free shipping, equal or better qaulity. Or go with the 520hx, coz modular is nice too.

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231122 4gb is going to needed in a year or two. Hell, assassins creed allready recommends 3gb of ram !!!

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...7031&Tpk=abit%2bip35-e any reason why the DFI ? That one is much cheaper and is also pretty good qaulity.

Going DFI for the quality and reputation. Everyone seems to love them and that is a pretty good price for a good board. Plus having RAID will be a bonus--I've also had bad experience with an XFX 680i(x2!) Mobo from Tiger--though the price for the Abit is tempting. Thanks you guys already updated my cooler, RAM (to the G skill 4GB) and PSU(to the modular Corsair). Thanks!

Reason for sticking with the 9600gt ? It's still a fine choice btw, but just wondering.

Not trying to stick with the 9600gt, but the budget may keep it there. That is why the Abit may get serious consideration. There seems to be some issues with it, but for the price it's hard to beat.

Yes it would fit, easily ... If you are considering that case though, consider the Antec Sonata III http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16811129024, very similar case, but comes with a antec earthwatts 500w unit, in the end, it will be a fair bit cheaper then buying the Solo, and the PSU seperate. That might save you enough money to get the 8800gt, or at least to stay within budget. Btw, the 8800gt is only 7$ more then the 9600gt, but it's like 10-20$ faster.

I'm sure you can stretch the budget 7$ ;)

Also, Fry's has the Gigabyte DS3L and the Q6600 for a deal--like 350 or around there. May do that to get that GPU. If not the Abit may have to be employed.

Good case.

I've seen people cram Tuniq Towers and Scythe Ninjas into the Solo, so that cooler should fit just fine. I have a 92mm cooler, although it's a different one, and there's plenty of clearance.

If you do go with that case, depending on how important quiet operation is to you, you'll probably want to upgrade the stock fan.

As far as the DFI motherboard, I would recommend against it. Not because it's DFI, as they're making great boards right now, but because the $30 or so you could save would buy you a noticeably better GPU. It sounds like your foray into overclocking will be tentative if it happens at all, so you really don't need the minute control the DFI board offers.

As far as RAID, are you sure you want it? What kind of setup, and why?

Edit: Perhaps saying I recommend against the DFI board is a bit strong. If you need to cut cost, that's one place I would be comfortable doing it. (Although to be fair you don't need to spend $90 on a PSU unless you really want modular cables, and in the post above mine Marc offers another way to cut the price down.)

Any input on the DS3L deal? Or would I be better off with the Abit?

PS I already own the case, because the last build went downhill-LOL. But the friend who is helping me build this system wants to buy it so it will even out. There is a combo deal with a card reader, so that saves also.

The ds3l isn't bad either, but as far as I know there isn't any real difference in qaulity between the abit and the gigabyte. Functionality is the same, so why pay more ? Both overclock plenty high.

The only thing is that it's not much of a deal.

A DS3L should cost you $80-90, and a Q6600 should cost you $260-270. Put them together and you're paying $340-360 without any discounts, so there's really nothing special about the Fry's deal.

Either board is fine, and the IP35-E is less expensive right now.

Edit: Fixed math error.

Sorry fellas, went with the "deal" at frys(I was already there and didn't read the messages until I got home)--so no offense. I'm okay with it--plus if something goes wrong I can return it and not worry about shipping. But at least now I'm getting better stuff from all you advice--faster vid card, better memory, HSF and better case. The only thing the same is the hard drive. I think you guys were right about RAID also, not needed for me--probably too advanced and the next build I can worry about it. Thanks again for all your help and input--I will let you know how it all works out.
