How is the backend of community websites programmed?

See title. I talked with a friend about this and we both really didn't have a clue, only some rough guesses. I think this belongs here because I'm not asking anything technical, I'm just curious what type of technology supports such a massive number of different users all interelated like for instance myspace is.

More than likely, a Oracle or SQL Server database server, along with a web server (or several in a farm). I'm guessing they use some type of Content Management System to allow the users to easily update their profiles.
