How is the ATI 9600?

I am looking at playing games NOT at high resoultion or wanting very HIGH FPS. I basically just want the games to be playable

Looking to spend anywhere from $50-100

I build a budget system for my brother-in-law (P4 2.8g, ATI 9600, 1gig PC3200 RAM) that runs well. He pulls down about 47 fps in 10x7 with x2AA on the Source:VST. Looks good and it's smooth. Very playable, but not high end.

I have been using a Radeon 9600 Non-Pro for awhile now and it does fine. I have it oced to 425mhz core and 500-512mhz memory ddr. So its not to much below a pro. I play at 1024x768 res. It plays KOTOR, Jedit Outcast, Jedi Academy, Battlefield, MOFAA and so on, just fine at the 1024 resolution. I also have the same card in my wifes lappy and it does a great job of playing the similar games above at a 1280x800 resolution. Hope this helps 🙂

I have the 9600XT. I like it . Played alot of UT2004 with it . Smooth at 1024 x 768 with most of the features set to high.

Just for kicks I have been looking at video cards and reading about them for the past month. Can I recommend a gf ti 4600. It seems, at the price it is now, that it is the best bang for the buck.

And certainly in your price range. (Someone has one on Anandtech now for $65.00)

Just my 2 cents.

ditto. the 9600xt is a great card.

I just started playing HL2 on my 9600, and it handles it wonderfully at 1024/786, 2x aniso and anti ailising. i get 46fps on the stress test. Provided your utting it with a decent processor (im running an athlon xp 2400 @ 1800 due to bios issues)

That is music to my ears. I just ordered a 9600 Pro 256MB and nothing but a rash of sh!t about here in the forums because it is such a crap card and I am a fool for getting anything less than a $200+ card...

I am happy to ride along behind the crst of the wave, thank you very much...

Stuff like this makes this all the more timeless

Its not a crap card it just not a good idea to by a card with 256mb of mem when it can't utilize it all, i mean its still gonna play games great just not as well as if it had the 256 bit interface with the memory.

you should be fine. as long as you dont need/want high resolutions or settings on half life 2 or doom 3.

I have 9600xt. Never been dissapointed. Cheap and provides the standard performane you want. Also allows you to save up some cash if you want to upgrade later. Why buy 9800 now when you can buy the x800 later!

Plain 9600

No XT, No Pro.

How does one compare to a 5200FX?

I may look into buying a NP 9700 Pro ?

Sorry, wasn't implying to get a 9600xt in particular. I was just speaking about the 9600's in general.

I used to love the 3DFX Voodoo line. I think they sued Nvidia for ripping off some of their ideas and won. Since then I have always stayed away from Nvidia. I like ATI's line of cards personally. It's a Ford/Chevy thing.......I like Chevys 🙂

lol nice teuton, neways, I have a sapphire radeon 9600 256mb 8xAGP. The card is pretty good.. I paid $101 for it 2 summers ago. Its still working nicely.. I just wish my monitor wasnt crap... its goin dead.. I hafta smack it to stop shaking or it turns off sometimes so it needs a smackdown.. I know that isnt a good thing 2 do.. but it works. ati is really good. Its jus a huge opinion of people.. nvidia/ati.
