How is T-Mobile cell service?

I've been thinking of getting a cell phone for quite a while now, but most places require for me to put down the minimum deposit in order to sign up. Apparently I have almost good credit, but not good enough. A friend recently went to T-Mobile and was able to get a phone with deposit, and was told that for those customers who typically have to put down a minimum deposit at places like Cingular regularly did not have to pay a deposit for T-Mobile. So I headed out today to check, and sure enough, they want me to pay a big larger activation fee, but only a few dollars more.

Now that I actually have an option for a cell provider, anyone with (or had) T-Mobile want to talk me in or out of going with them? I'm not super thrilled with their coverage maps around my location, but I'm hardly ever in the places that are marked "No Coverage". Also, my friend had went back home for the holidays, and was impressed with the coverage he received well into the mountains and the "No Coverage" area mapped out by T-Mobile.

So, anyone have any thoughts? I still need to double check with other providers to ensure I would still require a deposit. Since I've checked a couple of months ago, I've paid off an outstanding debt, and just paid off my 60 month car loan, so who knows?

t-mobile is the cheapest one (along with ATT), with free phone and rebate, and free anytime to t-mobile customers (on some plans i think). excellent reception in cities, YMMV in some suburb areas (some area in long island, NY is not that hot for t-mob)

good luck

its ok, the service is inexpensive, but i often get echoes or static in my calls. Its quite annoying.

that would probably be your phone with the problem

I'm happy with T-Mobile, but I live in NYC, where every single cell company makes sure we all have good service.

If you live in Socal you can go to Econowireless. I just signed up for a family plan with Cingular and they gave me $600 in cash (as in right away)plus $280 in rebates (hopefully I will get those too). I didn't get any new phones though. For the rebates they just give you some UPCs.

I  TMO! I have been VERY pleased with their CS. Their domestic coverage can be lacking in suburban areas, but they are VERY good in Germany/Europe. No trouble using my service over there. I've never had coverage issues in urban areas.

I joined TMO about this time last year via Amazon.com. After all the rebates and such, Amazon ended up paying me $20 for a Sony Ericsson T610 and Jabra Bluetooth headset.

Any hassles getting your rebates?

None. I literally came out $20 ahead.

no complaints so far here either...got all my rebates back from amazon...service coverage has been pretty decent...all around worth the cheap rate of $40 a month

If you stay close to the highways or expressways, your service will rock. Look at their service map and you will see what I mean.

BTW, I also used Cingular and Sprint before TMO. As far I am concerened, I will remain a TMO customer as long as I need a cellphone.

T-Mobile is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom.

How long did it take? The usual couple of months?

Same question for GTaudiophile please.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses 🙂.

If you have friends who have mobile phones, ask them about the strength of the signal -- in your house, school/work, etc. That'll give you an idea if you'll get good signals at the places you hang out.

Then, if you're on a budget, start with the cheapest plan, and don't ask for any other frills (insurance, etc.) Keep in mind that the plan you sign up for will also be taxed, so that $29.99/month plan might actually be ~ $35 with taxes, etc.

Never, never go over your minutes (or if you decide to go on holiday to another state, check how much your mobile phone charges for roaming.) Don't get burned for roaming calls >.<

And finally, even with my mishap with Cingular, I definitely recommend them, especially after the Cingular/ATT merge.

I love t-mobile. It's the best one i've ever had. I went through, cingular, at&t, and POS nextel.

T-mobile so far got the best signal & customer service. I'm in South Jersey BTW.
I had it for a year so far.

Everyone I know (3 of em) who got nextel hated the POS. They always complain about signal. AT&T sucks and got bought out.

In Central New Jersey and all my friends are either on Tmobile or Verizon. I personally have Tmobile and its cheaper and I can't complain about the service or the CS.

I got all rebates back within 6 weeks IIRC.

I am in the Atlanta area and have the $40 plan (600 anytime, unlimited nights & weekends).

Thanks for the advice. I actually had service with Cingular in the past, but under my brother's name. He failed to pay his cell bill after just a couple of months, and eventually turned off my service 5 months later (no missed or late payments by the way). I'm well aware of the costly mistakes of not knowing your plan. 🙂 Sorry to read your thread.

After seeing what kind of rebates Amazon offers, I'd be crazy not to get service there. I'm just assuming that ordering from Amazon.com would net me the same larger activation fee that a local store was going to offer.

Amazon link.

I can't access my Amazon.com order history or else I could be more exact, but this is basically how it went:

1) Sony Ericsson T610 phone cost $199.99.
2) At the time, Amazon also has a coupon code for a free Jabra Freespeak Bluetooth headset ($125 value).
3) Also, depending on what plan you signed up for, you got a certain rebate: A) $150 back if you got the $20 plan, B) $200 back if you got the $30 plan, C) $220 back if you got the $40 plan or better, including family plans.
4) So I bought the T610 with the $30 plan, getting a $200 rebate. I also used the coupon code to get the free BT headset that I never use.
5) So, at this point I've spent $199, got a $200 rebate, earning me $1.
6) Within 30 days of purchse, Amazon lowered the price of the T610 by $20 to $179.99. I called Amazon and they credited my account $20.
7) In the end, I made $21 on the deal.

I remember reading the fine print of the rebate saying I would receive my rebate within 6 weeks after a certain date, and I did receive the rebate by then.
