How is Laser Printer/Toner open shelf life?

I'm debating getting a cheap monochrome laser printer for assignments. I've always used an inkjet printer. The issue I've noticed is if you don't use them enough, even with cleaning, the print head eventually has issues (and ink runs out, but usually at a slower rate. Old Canon S530D by the way). How is the shelf life for laser printers that aren't used daily? If I only have to use it a few times a month, maybe with even up to half a year without use, will I have problems regarding the print quality and toner?

I haven't changed the cartridge in my Laserjet 4000 in over two years. I don't do a lot of printing. Anyway, there is no problem that I can see. The toner, when packaged, is sealed twice. An internal pull strip and all in a mylar bag inside the box.

Once in the machine it doesn't have a problem. As you get near empty, you may have to remove it and rock the cartridge back and forth to spread what's left inside more evenly.

The Staples ad telling the nerd to "shake it" is not far off. You remove and rock the cartridge - not the whole printer. :)
