How is it that German can get by without apostrophes?

This just makes me wonder why English has to have the stupid things, if German has managed OK without them for all this time. Funny though that German pedants are getting annoyed for essentially the opposite reason that upsets English-speaking ones.

Because they assume you just know when somebody is using a contraction, or because when people elide or shorten stuff, they're usually hacking it off the end of the word and not the middle.
