How is it possible for Titanic to be #1?

Considering the immense popularity of Lord of the Rings, and any other number of monumental films, how can a sappy love story like Titanic have gotten the $1.8 billion status that it has? I know that I didn't flock to the theaters when it was out, and I don't remember any massive amount of hype surrounding its release. Was Titanic extremely popular outside the US or something like that? Were Titanic tickets twice as expensive as regular tickets? :p

I saw it once, the day it came out. I had no idea it would become so big.

Because teenage girls and families far outnumber the amount of geeks worldwide.

I liked the Titanic from a historical standpoint. It was the most accurate representation of the disaster to date.

there are two responses to this. either
a: the LotR trilogy appeals to more than just geeks
b: GEEKS HAVE TAKEN OVER THE POPULACE!

It had one of the longest box office runs that I can remember. I swear it was in the theatres for close to a year. Pretty much unheard of.

Why? I dunno. It was okay to watch once. I saw it in the theatres when it came out, haven't seen it since.

LOL... here you have the rivalry between nerds into dungeons and dragons vs. a classic love story.

Honestly, I'd rather watch Titanic than LOTR... the latter is not my kind of movie... not because it's for "nerds" but because I'm not into that sorta thing, plain and simple. I saw ROTK once and wasn't intrigued.

So how is it possible ? There are more normal people than nerds who also see it 20 times. ;)

The movie wasn't great, but as has been said, a lot of people went to see it 20 times.

There was a story about some lady from Minnesota IIRC who went to see it EVERY DAY it was out. It was a huge story in the newspaper because they had a blizzard there and she wasn't able to see it for 3 whole days (oh noes!).

MY GF loves that movie... but I refuse to add the DVD to my collection (see my sig) simply because it is a crappy non-anamorphic transfer.

I never saw it in it's entirety. Too boring and I can't stand Leonardo DeCrapio (although, I heard he was pretty good in 'Gangs of NY'-I may have to break down and start appreciating his ability if he is convincing in that role).

I didn't go see 'Titanic' in theaters and just caught bits and pieces of it on HBO.

You don't know $hit that movie was made in the 50's and they had no clue what actually happened. In Terms of Damage and that it broke apart when it sunk and numerous other details which were uncovered by Ballard's discovery of the wreckage in '86 and numerous scientific dives to present date.

The love story part is hollywood but the recreation of the sinking was accurate .

Edit: I saw it twice in theatres, both times sitting too damned close to said screaming 13 year-olds :|

I ended up buying the DVD. While the love story is sappy, Cameron's attention to detail from a historical perspective of the event is quite awesome.

Titanic is a really good movie. So much detail was put into it to pull the audience into such an emotional event. I'm not going to jump into the I-hate-anything-popular crowd as some of my friends have.
