Are you on call 24/7?

There is this add in the newspaper regarding a job opening.

The ad says:

Full-time position. Provides assistance to the IT dept in maintaining & supporting all computer systems, applications & users. Knowledge & experience using Novel network solutions, Windows 2000 & Microsoft Office preferable. Knowledge of hotel operations, point of sale, & communication systems helpful. Hours must be flexible to accomodate 24/7 operations. Salary commensurate w/experience + excellent benefits.

It says to apply in person.

I would love to land this job doing entry level stuff and eventually moving up.

How is it to get a call at 3:00 am saying the servers crashed?

Well, you are on call 24/7, which sucks... but it is usually easy work, with good pay.

As long as you don't fool around with settings, you won't be getting 3AM calls every other day. More like a few times in the entire year.

Computers and networks are designed to run uninterrupted. So, normally you dont get called.
But, things dont always go as planned.

All praise be to Allah I'm going to try and apply for this job even though I don't have IT experience hahaha.

What can I put down on the application as far as experience goes?

I'm knowledgable with Windows and Office. Haven't touched Novell though :(

The main thing I'm riding on is that it says preferred. It does not say it is neccessary for someone like myself to have these qualifications. I'm sure there are TONS more people who are going to apply for the job with the skills and qualifications but it does not hurt to try.

Sucks ass. I left my job as Network Manager just a month ago because it was too damn stressful. I now have a job that has almost no responsibility and I love it! If something goes wrong with a system or the email server goes down... who do you think they are going to call? The network manager/administrator... which sucks.

The calls at night aren't the problem, it's the blame you have to take for screw ups. You delete a file by mistakes, get ready for an angry boss. Delete an email by mistake, get ready for an angry boss. Something didn't work right, get ready for an angry boss.

You must not think very highly of this job (or any other network admin job) if you think that you can land it as an "Entry level" position with no experience.
