How is Gothic 3?

I heard Gothic 3 sucked when it first came out, but then that there's been a series of patch and community-based patches which made the game enjoyable. Before I spend - what the $5 to get it - can anyone tell me what it's like? Is it like Morrowind, or something else? How is the combat system and level-up system?

Thanks.

Better than morrowind, even without the patches. You definitely want to get the patches, though.

It's a good game now. Definitely patch it up.

The combat is much improved from release; shields work now, and you can be a bit more tactical in melee, rather than just clicking away (although you have to sometimes). I still find the archery in G3 to be the best I've tried in any game.

They've filled out so many areas and quests it's hard to know where to begin. Rest assured it's much more complete now.

In the end (like many games) your enjoyment will depend on how immersed you get in the game. Some people still don't care for it. For me it's a great world to explore.

G3 spanned across 3 monitors is pretty damn cool.

I loved it as well. Looks a little dated now though.
I made some improved distant textures for the game and released them on the JoWood forum some time ago. I sure can't seem to find the downloads anymore now that the forum is gone.

:Edit: They still exist, amazing lol.

First file is the higher res distant textures, not really sure if it's the latest or not, as I remember tweaking them a few times to get them to blend in as best I could. Of course the originals don't most of the time anyway, so should be an improvement either way. The second file tones down the over saturation on the intractable vegetation, so it now looks a lot more natural; obviously makes the stuff harder to find as well.

Its bit like Risen,Morrowind type of game, yes its brilliant especially with latest community patch and quite a long game so you will get more then $50 worth let alone $5.

No idea Gothic 3 was this good. What about the other installments in the series? I'll hold on just wait to get all 4 as a package when the price is right. Just a matter of time.

That the game has good community support is great to hear. Is it anywhere near as moddable as the elderscroll games?

4 had totally different mechanics so I wouldnt include that in the series.

Gothic 4 was like 1/100th as good. It looks nicer, but was a terrible game. 3 is much better.

I also understand that G3: Forsaken Gods was utter trash too.
Both Forsaken Gods and Gothic 4 are different developers than the rest of the series, so they are indeed ignorable.

The rest of the series is great however, with Gothic 1 and 2 having the best parts of the story. Gothic 3 often gets knocked for it's story compared to the other two, and it's fair enough I suppose, since it's place is more of a closing act to the other games. It has a much bigger world than the others however, so depends on what the player is looking for.

I bought the entire set of games when they were on sale on Steam. I started with Gothic 4, and havent played any of the others.

The graphics are great, even on my low end system. Otherwise, the game is not outstanding. I am about half way through the game, and havent played it for a while.

The first 2 gothics are orgasmic, the third is actually the lesser of the 3, but still good. Risen is considered by many fans to be the 4th installment, rather than that arcania fable clone piece of garbage.

As for mods, it has a ton of them, but nowhere near as many as Oblivion or Fallout 3.

I honestly can't play RPGs as old as Gothic 1 and 2 anymore; they look and feel so dated! Gothic 3 is basically the cusp of crapiness I can tolerate in appearance.

Risen was at least as bad as Gothic 4... both were terrible.

OHHHH REGINALD...

After thinking about it more, I'm pretty sure I was thinking of Risen 2, which I got through about 45 mins of before an overdoes of RPG cliche killed me. I'm not sure I've ever played Risen... it good?

Risen 2 is not even out yet so I think you must be confused with Gothic 2.

Anyway Risen was a decent game IMHO and I disagree with your statement about Gothic 3.

I played alot of Gothic 3 and liked the open ness, but once I got the lightning and enough mana, it became way too easy and around that time my hdd crashed.

I moved onto risen, similar style but not as fun.

Risen 2 doesn't exist yet.

:Edit: I see that's been mentioned.

Ya, I clearly have no idea what I'm talking about. I've played all these games, but I can't keep them straight in my head. Is Risen the one where you start out shipwrecked on a beach, and there are a bunch of giant emu things running around, or is that Gothic 4?

Risen is indeed the shipwreck.

i consider this was a game that if you like RPGs you would love. But again like in the case of other games it's just a matter of taste

Ok then, I'm back on the same page as everyone else. I did not like this game, and felt bad I bought it. Just like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Two Worlds 2, and Gothic 4; all really bad imo. If Skyrim and Diablo 3 weren't just around the corner, I don't know what I'd do...
