My 6800 GT plays it okay at 800x600 and struggles a bit at 1024x768 with everything turned up except for soft shadows and texture detail (no AA). So I wouldn't expect much from a 9800 pro; you will probably either have to drop the resolution or live with low fps.

It's a decent game as far as the actual gameplay goes, but this crappy engine is irritating.

Sounds like your overall system is a little bit on the slow side. At 10x7 with everything maxed - no soft shadows - 2x/8x AA/AF I pull 29/54/1xx on the test settings demo. I actually play with 0/8x AA/AF which bumps the minimum up to 34-35fps. This is with a x800xl which I believe run on par with each other in this game?

What are your min/avg/max numbers?

At 10x7 with no AA or AF I get 43/66/something. I consider a minimum of 60 to be a good setting for playability and it drops into the low 40s too often when actually playing the game.

The 9800p is still a decent card - I dont have one now, but I used to have one in my AXP rig, and it ran BF2 40-50fps at 1024 with medium settings + 4xAA/8xAF. It should definitely run FEAR at medium settings 1024 resolutions, maybe even with 2xAA if you OC it.

Can't we all just click Auto-Detect and be happy?

It auto-detected for me 1024x768, most medium some max settings, 4x AA and 8xAF and its smooth. Why kill your smoothness for eye candy? T.T

Why? because autop detect is a "rough" estimate of your system . . . "tweaking" will give superior custom results. 😉

i'd expect you to be able to play max details, shadows on, soft shadows off (look like ass anyway), 2xaa/8xaf at least with that res

For my system, I found
1680x1050
Max w/ software shadows off & vol light off
2xAA/8xAF
quite unplayable.

what is the performance gain with dx8 shaders? i remember hl2 ran much faster with almost no iq loss except fro water at dx8 shader apth level. how does fear do?
I got a 9800pro. i'd like to run 10x7 low-med.

It ran pretty good for me at 1600x1024 with all options on high or max. Just make sure to turn shadows OFF - shadows are the real killer. Luckily, unlike DOOM3 there are still lightmap shadows that are used in almost all places so the game still retains 90% of its darkness with shadows turned off.

ok well just played fear and all stuff is on max @ 1280x960 and i have to say for the graphics, they arent really that impressive at all. it seems really blocky.i dont have any AA enabled however but it looks just like when the resolution isnt right, yet it is. weird. looks like a so so game. quake 4 looks to be more impressive.

Fear runs at perfect speeds with autodetect settings at 1024. The autodetection sets most settings on medium, some on high, and one or two on low.

Also, you can run at 1024 absolute maximum settings except for soft shadows and still be playable but not quite as fast as autodetect.

People saying a 9800 Pro will struggle at 800X600 minimal settings have no clue what they are talking about.

I think the game looks different. Not a bad different, but a good one. I was also impressed by the AI. I imagine ill pick it up eventually here. I have more games than time tho atm.

Seriously, just about anything out right now will run on a 9800Pro, if you dont crank the resolution up, or AA it to the MAAAAX like some seem to do. It'll run fine.

I just sold my 9800 pro and I totally agree, it was a real work horse. I just wanted to be able to play BF2 without seeing everything in it's lowest form. I made the mistake of turning everything on when I first got it and seeing how incredible everything was. Of course it was a total slide show, but man was it pretty.

Hmmmm, the 9800pro seems to handle this game decently well. I get ~40 fps @ 800X600 with settings at medium-high. You can run the game at 1024, but settings will have to be ~low-medium for a decent >30 fps.
