How is Farscape?

I think the only two series I haven't watched now are Farscape and Babylon 5, and I was just wondering what people thought of them, and whether it's worth it to rent the dvd's for either. Opinions?

I really enjoyed the character transformation of John Criieghton over the seasons, from mild-mannered scientist to galactic badass. By the end his character was a lot wilder than the tame Mitchell on SG-1.

Babylon 5 starts off with stiff acting, but the story arc over four seasons is quite good.

I'd recommend both, and with both I'll warn you that you have to rent at least a couple of discs to get into them.

But then one of the first SG-1 episodes was the awful "planet of male chauvinist barbarians" and look at how much it improved after that.

yeah, SG1 became epic greatness, and they're cancelling it in favor of that shlt stained aborted fetus Atlantis.

Sh!tty.

the acting sucks, the plot sucks, the costumes look like they were bought at Party City, and I'm pretty sure I saw a muppet having sex with some alien frog on it a few days ago. Stay away.

Babylon is OK, only seen a few episodes.

Stick with Stargate SG-1 and, if you want, Atlantis (SG-1 is better by far though. Going off the air soon :( )

I avoid BSG like the plauge simply because the characters try to act all deep when they really just come off as angsty emos sniffing ink on a ship.

LOL, I watch BSG and think it's great, but so true, so true.

B5 was a masterpiece. The start is a little rough, but so are the first seasons of most good series (TNG Anyone?).

Farscape was entertaining, but a little out there.

First 3 seasons of Farscape are kinda good, but seasons 4 and 5 went down the crapper as the Sci-Fi channel started to cut their production budget and move it to Stargate.

Anyone remember Sci-Fi Fridays? Stargate, something else, Farscape

Also, what JMWarren said about B5 is so true.

yeah, B5 was pretty good, but Bruce Boxleitner, BRUCE BOXLIETNER, c'mon. Might as well have the Orange Clean guy Billy Mays as your main character.

Yeah, the only reason I ask about those to is because I've watched pretty much all there is to see at this point, pretty much all the star treks, stargates, BSG, firefly (god I wish there was more firefly), and I just don't wanna repeat, but watch something new to me in my spare time.

Oh, SG-1 was awesome because of RDA, and I like Atlantis, I think the character of Rodney is pretty funny, albeit it's starting to get repetitive and old, I hope they mix up and refresh the characters a bit.

As for that last episode of SG-1, I thought it was a pretty good surrogate ending (until the movies come out). I was actually quite surprised that it wasn't as corny as most sci-fi endings.

Personally, I like Farscape. It's very different from most sci-fi series. The main characters are criminals for the most part and tend to act it. Largely, their attitude is to save their butts over saving the universe. That changes towards the end of season 4. The middle seasons, 2 and 3, are the best ones.

Babylon 5 is fantastic, though. Probably the best thing before SG-1 was created. The story is expansive and encompasses practically the whole series. Don't worry about the stiffness/dryness of season 1, that's just establishing the world. Season 2 is where it kicks in and never looks back. It's also a series you have to watch twice; the first time to know what's going on, the second time to see the massive amounts of foreshadowing that goes on. It's also the single coolest role that Walter Koenig (Chekov from star trek) has ever played.

What last episode? They still have the second half of season 10 to air I thought. And that's starting mid April from what I've seen around the net.

Babylon 5 was great...especially for its day when season long story arcs, much less series long story arcs were unheard of.

Farscape was a trip. I lost interest in the latter seasons because it was starting to get really weird but "Crackers Don't Matter" is by far my favorite episode.

Yeah, but they aired already in Canada I think, therefore they can be easily found on the intarweb if you know where to look ;)

Farscape is great, but it is a little out there. Still, I found it pretty entertaining. Just make sure you watch it from the beginning. You can't just jump into it like you can with Stargate SG-1. The storyline gets pretty complicated. John Crichton (Ben Browder) is pretty funny, especially how he is always making references to things on Earth and nobody ever knows WTF he is talking about.

edit: If you are looking for something new and different, Farscape definitely fits that bill.

FWIW- Farscape is ok, it was different and as pointed out already in the thread has some truly magical one-liners and episodes, but it is very patchy and too reliant on magical technoligies and does tend to lack consistency.

Go for Babylon 5 though- the first season is extremely rocky due to many different writers and such, but the story takes off from there. Bruce Boxleitner definitely grew into the role over time and did a nice and solid job. He's not the main point though- the plot and supporting characters are, and they are truly fantastic. Londo Molari, G'kar, and so many others, along with JMS's great writing made it an incredible show. B5 is an epic saga, and stands apart for that reason alone.

Watch Farscape for the characters. Don't take it too seriously, and it's actually kind of entertaining.

B5 requires suffering through season 1, which is quite patchy. Starting from the end of season 1 until the end of season 4, it really picks up and gets good.
Farscape is a very quirky, original show that pretty much requires watching all episodes in sequence. It also helps if you watch them in a short period of time so you don't forget what's going on. Season 1 is weak compared to the later seasons, but it holds up reasonably well. Ben Browder's performance is truly excellent, as is his character development. Other characters range between excellent and just plain weak (I'm looking at your annoying @ss, Noranti). It is a character-driven show though and definitely worth watching.

Taken as a whole series, B5 is the best Sci-Fi show ever made. As others said, you have to suffer through Season 1, but it's worth it. Season 5 starts off rocky too, but it's because the studio told them the show was being canceled after Season 4; so they rushed to finish up all the main story arcs; then after they'd finished shooting all of S4, they were picked up by a new network and were able to continue; and this was in addition to losing two main characters at the end of S4 (one unexpectedly).
