I have read where CCC is coming to linux and where Ati might actually make an effort to make its cards more user friendly.

Is this really true and is it worth going with Ati with nVidia kicking butt now?

nope. still looks like 1 guy is spending 15 minutes a week during his lunch break on the linux drivers. probably best to go with nvidia if you want to do any sort of decent 3d gaming in linux (or if you just want decent drivers :p).

Same old same old. Last I looked the latest generation cards are completely unsupported with the current drivers (par for the course), video overlay bugs with TV out render the 'old' cards (e.g., 9600) completely unsuitable for DVR use, and the working cards have abysmal performance compared to Windows or NV products a notch or two down. There is still no support for mpeg2 (or any other) video decoding with any ATI card.

Stay away from ATI for Linux. You are welcome to read the horror stories on phoronix and rage3d, or just pick up an older card to see just how bad the driver is. ATI drivers are the reason I migrated to Windows.

AMD is somewhat Linux friendly, so that may or may not be changing in the coming years. Only time will tell.

The Truth About ATI/AMD & Linux

Published on June 01, 2007 by Michael Larabel.

Last year when AMD announced their acquisition of ATI it led many to wonder how this would impact the quality of their Linux support and driver. Some had even speculated that AMD would be opening the code to at least a subset of their graphics drivers, and while this issue has come up again more recently, we will cover this particular topic in a different article. In this article we will be exposing what truly consists of the ATI/AMD driver development cycle and ultimately what they are really doing to improve their image in the Linux community. We have been granted unprecedented access to share with you their once unknown driver development model.

A snippet^ ... it's 9 pages long ... read on if you want to know

Thanks for the link, apoppin.

Still, it seems that their Linux drivers don't have near the options of their Windows counterpart.

running ati x800gt under ubuntu 7.04 with beryl+xgl. works great for me. ati drivers installed in a minute using the restricted driver manager. i don't see what more you want.

ps. i hope CCC (crappy control center) never comes to linux.
