How is CPU Fan Speed controlled?

Is CPU fan speed adjusted based on CPU temp only?

CPU fan speed is lower when Q-Fan control is enabled. Why?

I have an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe MB

With Q-Fan disabled, the CPU fan will run at its' fully rated speed. When you enable it, you can set the ratio of full speed. I believe the lowest ratio is 11/16 on the P4P800, so the fan will run at 11/16 of the full rated speed. And yes, you are right, the fan will be thermally controlled and ramp up to it's full speed if needed. Only thing I didn't like was that you couldn't set the temperature at which ramping began. Also, I know some people with fans that wouldn't even turn at the lowest ratio so you need to use care. I ran my stock Intel HSF with Q-Fan and didn't have any problem. It will work with any 3 pin fan that is plugged into the CPU fan header on the MB. All it does is adjust voltage to the fan in the ratio you select. It did quiet things down alot......

I don't enable Q-Fan anymore, I just use one of these: http://www.bestbyteinc.com/pro...ion=&aitem=11&mitem=26

It works very well with fine control on my Zalman 92mm fan with a Swiftech MCX478.....

I recently switched Mb's to an IC7 and have been thinking of getting another one to control the NB fan......6000 rpm just ain't cuttin the mustard on that noisy little bastard....

If you want more control try SpeedFan.

I just downloaded it. This is a great program! I heard of it before but didn't realize it was that good. Thanks Operandi. Looks like I won't need the fanmate after all, I dropped the NB fan from 6000 to 3500rpm. Big audible difference and the NB sink is cool to the touch, so I'm good to go.........

Is there any site that explains how to use SpeedFan?

Hit the configure button, the two main areas you need to look at are "temperatures" and "speeds". The temperatures tab will determine the desired temp, I use 50C. You can then expand each temp and bind a fan to it. Obviously you'll want to bind the CPU temp to the CPU fan, I also have my exhaust fan set to the system temp, but that?s not quit as important

The speeds tab will let you set the min and max speed of each fan, both the CPU and exhaust fan run as low 60% in my system. Set as low as you can while maintaining good idle temps.
