how is comcast's cable modem speed?

getting switched to comcast from time warner, wondering how the speed is? i'm debating switching to DSL, which offers 2x the upload of time warner's cable modem for the same price (even after having to sign up for phone service), or sticking with cable.

so, is it comcastic?

I'm apparently on Comcast now (previously Adelphia). I was on the premium high speed from Adelphia before. Seems pretty much the same.

There are at least a couple tiers of speed. I have the 6Mbps/384K one (lower end) and I love it. For the first 50 MB of each download you get twice the speed (12Mbps burst rate). Still, finding fast mirrors on the web is not easy. DSL may have a higher upload, but it sure isn't as fast on the downstream (in most conditions).

P.S. 6Mbps/8 = 768KB/s, 384Kbps/8 = 48KB/s.

Comcast has the highest download speeds and is even planning on upgrading the standard w/cable speed from 6Mb to 8Mb, with the speed tier being 12Mb. However upload speeds aren't in high demand and are lacking, you'd have to ask your DSL provider about what they offer. As far as downloading goes Comcast is much faster than DSL.

southwestern bell, ert, sbc, ert, at&t is doing a special right now, you get 6/768 for $35 a month with no contract. my cable is 6/384.

I pay $10 extra per month for 8mbit - 768kbit service.

(all statements below have a tolerance of +- 5% or so)
I ALWAYS get 8mbits down, never a problem with that. Downloads burst to approx. 20mbit for the first minute or so, then gradually drops down to 8mbit. I dont use the upload nearly as much, but I have never seen a problem with that either, almost always at 768kbit. No problems with ping times either.

Only problem i've ever had with them is with their DNS servers not being perfect, which I solved by using 4.2.2.4 / 4.2.2.5 as my DNS servers.

alot of places will have different claims on how fast their services are, but depending on your lines, proximity to sub-stations, or where you're stacked on the cable leg, will affect your net speeds.

to get a decent evaluation, try this site for an independent speed test. if some of the comcast folks will try this and then report their findings, that might help you a bit more.
