How is Amazon's video streaming service?

Getting better. They just signed contracts with most companies so you get almost all of the popular titles you get with Netflix.

their tv lineup is a lot better than I thought. Might have to get prime since it's 50% off. Can you stream amazon to a wdtv live yet? I have the newer one.

Isn't it two tiers though in regards to movies? The Netflix-like stuff that that's 8 weeks since release comes with the subscription and just released movies are like $4 a piece.

It's pretty friggin terrible compared to netflix. But it's cheaper and an add-on to prime, so it's understandable. But don't buy it for the sole purpose of watching things.

I probably wouldn't pay for it just for the service itself, but as an extra bonus from using Amazon Prime it's not too bad. I've found in a couple cases when I wanted to watch a specific title and Netflix was disc only, Amazon Prime instant streaming had the title available.

Here's one big thing I really dislike about it:

I let my kids watch cartoons on the Fire. I can fire up Netflix and more or less forget about it (they're not at an age where I need to sweat content protection...yet). If they switch shows - no big deal.

If they're clicking around Amazon, they can end up buying episodes that aren't included in free.

It streams way better for me then Hulu+ on my Roku and without the stupid ads.

I noticed they have a lot more content now, especially some of the non mainstream shows like GoldRush, but it looks like they are fee based rentals.

I personally thought the video quality (via Roku) was far and away better than the video quality of Netflix. But that's just me.

My experience with their streaming video service is the free stuff through Prime. (Mostly Star Trek episodes. 😀)
- They didn't properly deinterlace any of it, so it looks lousy on playback.

Movies: Looked alright. The quality wasn't too good, as my connection seems to go to hell whenever I play streaming video.

The other issue I hit was skipping. About 30 minutes into a Star Trek episode, or maybe about 1 hour into a movie, it would often lose the connection to the server. Trying to seek somewhere else would result in the player giving me a connection error message. The page needed to be refreshed in order to keep watching.

It's not something I would pay for. Only a fraction of the tv shows available stream free w/ Prime membership ... and I'm not one to buy tv shows.

I only found one movie to watch (Office Space) and found only one tv show I cared about. After a month of free trial there was nothing more to see, AFAIC.

Hulu gives me 3-10 shows a week, depending on season - so why use Amazon? *crickets*

I should add that the streaming/playback was fine on my pc. No ad breaks, easy to pause/resume.

It doesn't seem to have playlist or queue support. Users have faked it using a Wishlist, but there's no way to play multiple videos in a row.

Is frustrating that its not on xbox or ps3. Then to top it off there is no hd available on the htpc.
