How is a cheap sub $1k projector compare to a 37" LCD TV for HD movies?

I'm in the market for a $1k HD-LCD-TV, I've been checking hotdeals constanty but I've noticed that there alot of sub $1k projectors that do 720P/1080i. How is that quality? Is it pretty bright?

I would like to pair it up with HD-DVD player or maybe PS3 for HD goodness.

You're asking about sub $1k front projectors compared to $1k LCDs?

I'm glad you understood the question. I've read it 5 times and I'm still not sure what he's asking.

It would have helped if he put projector somewhere in the title 😛

Yep. But the link explained it.

If I was looking for a $1k projector to do HD content, I would probably start by researching the Optoma HD70 more.

None of the ones you linked to are HD.

Try AVSforum for a lot more info.

A direct view 37" LCD vs a front projection setup are going to be totally different experiences.

With any of the front projection options, you're going to want your room to be as dark as possible.

Get both 🙂
Currently I have an Infocus 4805 and a 30" LCD (which will be a 40" LCD in a week). Eventually I do want to upgrade the 4805 to the HD70 previously mentioned (which I think is your best bang for the buck within your price range).

It depends on your situation if you have to choose one or the other. If you have good light control and don't mind watching things in a dark(er) room, then I'd say the projector is amazing. But if you want something for daily watching where you will turn off and on the tv quite frequently, maybe the LCD is better.

So even with 720p/1080i capability its not HD? Does it upconvert to those resolutions?

The one I listed is a 720p projector. That will get you HD res.

The projectors that are 480p / 800x600 / etc. that you linked to will accept HD resolutions but they will be converted to the non-HD native res of the projectors.

Yes, so it can accept an HD signal but not be HD. It downscales it to whatever resolution. This is the case with the infocus 4805 (which is 480p). This isn't to say that you can get a GREAT image (especially for the price) with a 480p projector. You can get a used 4805 for $300-500 on ebay likely.

If you want to see some pictures of both a PJ and LCD, I have an old thread:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=38&threadid=1674434&arctab=y

EDIT: The HD70 is HD, the infocus 4805 isn't as yoyo said just above.

The Panasonic AE900 or AE700 are great sub-$2k 720p projectors. The AE900 replaced the AE700 last year, and the AE900 is being replaced by another projector this year (another incremental upgrade, I forget what the model number for the new one is). The AE700 is 2 years (and 2 model generations) old but is still a great 720p projector, so you may be able to find it for about $1k. I think the AE900 can be had for $1.5k right now and the AE700 for a couple hundred cheaper. So I wouldn't be surprised if you could find the AE700 for about $1k after the latest projector comes out.

I've seen the AE900 and the image quality is awesome. A good LCD probably has better image quality, but those panny projectors aren't outclassed. If you go the projector route, I'd recommend at least 720p. At 100" screen sizes, the extra resolution really matters.

Of course you'll want ther oom as dark as possible.

Random AE900U shots (and some 4805 ones if you want to look)

Doesn't really turn out so great in photographs because the room is so dark.

Listen to YOyoYOhowsDAjello, he knows his stuff when it comes to projectors. The HD70 that he linked to is by far the best deal out there in projectors.

Personally I don't find 30-40" LCDs all that spectacular. Again, this is my opinion, think that that the "Wow factor" really begins at 46-50". For $300 more I would STRONGLY recommend that you think about a last-years-model Samsung 50" DLP from amazon or (shudder) tigerdirect.

BUT if your viewing habits allow for it (night time viewing or a dark enough room, and a suitable empty wall to project onto) a HD projector will blow you and your guests away.

Actually, the early talk about this new projector (PT-AX100U) indicates it is quite an improvement over the AE900. Here is one of the first reviews. Unfortunately it would be over of his $1K budget.

I went from a 65" HD CRT Toshiba tv and owned a 32" LCD HD tv to a non hd Optoma H31 projector and a 100" screen and I can tell you with experance in both that the PJ I got smokes both. Even though it is not a hd PJ at about 16 feet I can count the dimples on skin and hair on a head as good as I could on either of the two other tv's with one major plus. 100 inches of theater like goodness! I can only assume that a true HD PJ(or even a 720 hd PJ) would even be better then what I got. But if you got $1k to spend, the room, and can affor the bulbs go for the PJ.

As for a HD do listen to yoyo for that is a great one for $1k. I would of gotten it myself but I had only $1k total to spend for screen and pj so I didnt go that route but Im not dissapointed in the least. Besides unless you sit closer to the screen you wont be able to really tell the diff in picture at say 20 feet plus away. And btw my set up cost me $660 after rebate for the PJ and screen 😉
