How inept is our Government? How about letting the Chinese see everything that is X-Rayed coming into L.A.

Apologies if this is a repost. Saw the article was a month old... but just read about it in the latest USNews&world report.

Basically a company run the the son of China's president underbid on a contract to provide x-ray scanning machines at the Port of L.A. Aside form the fact that China does business with Iran and Venzueala... does no one in the government find it fishy that the Chinese underbid others by nearly a million dollars? They bid 1.8 mil and the next highest was 2.7 mil.

Oh well.. the Chinese are friends of the United States right?

The Chinese could have seen everything first hand when they put it on the cargo ship coming to L.A., so what's the big deal about "letting them" see it on X-ray upon arrival? I'm not sure I get what your concern is, and based on the tone it's probably tinfoil-esque.

I love the title:
"Port of L.A. buys Chinese X-ray scanning system with U.S. taxpayer money"
Considering the US is running almost $1Trillion deficit largely financed by China, it's a bit ironic :)

Given china's proven track record of massive espionage operations... corporate, military, you name it, yeh it is a little tinfoil-esque. Anyway, the reason the Chinese were probably able to underbid is because the thing is probably stolen technology to begin with.

I guess it would not be so bad if it were simply an X-ray device to be used by port of L.A. employees... but it does have the ability to be contacted wirelessly.

It would be a useful tool for the chinese to engage in trend analysis... see what stuff gets caught by the U.S. customs and see what doesn't. To me that is useful intelligence.

No one could find any infringing patents and Sandia engineers went over it... what's the problem again?
