Flash gurus - how does THIS work??? I tried to figure it out but I am tired. It has me pretty intrigued I must say. 🙂

You can only get answers in multiple of 9s. So any number you pick and you do the subtraction, you'll never get anything other than 0, 9, 18, 27....etc. You'll notice all multiple of 9s have the same symbol, even when they changed.
