How important is VT-x or AMD-V in VMWare virtualization?

This may seem like an odd question but I've qualified for some sort of statewide competition in regards to cyber security. The competition consists of a "Netwar" (I had never heard of this before I qualified for the competition) between teams using preconfigured VMWare instances.

I have to travel an hour to the competition and we must provide our own computer and peripherals. I have a little bit older laptop (Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 256 GB SSD) but it does not support Intel VT-x. On the other hand I have the desktop in my signature which is a good bit more powerful and supports AMD-V. Do you think I would see a detrimental speed difference if I took the laptop as opposed rather than the desktop to the competition? I have no experience using VMs at the moment.

how old is your c2d. Most of them do have vt-x. go to ark intel and enter your cpu and see if it does support vt-x. Also you can't run too many vm with only 4gb of ram. You'll need to upgrade that. Maybe find a cheap one a craigslist. I think most sandy bridge cpu support 8gb sodimms so you can load 16gb on a laptop and travel.

Support varies but generally you can't virtualize a 64bit OS without it. In a lot of cases VT-x is a significant increase in performance also.
