how important is the center channel for a home theater setup?

very. if you're watching a movie, i'd say 60-80% of the sound comes from the center channel. dialogue will sound much better and sound imaging should be better as well. get a good one.

If you are watching something that is only in stereo, it will not make any difference, but if you want DD or Pro-Logic, the center channel is problobly the most important. Pretty much all of the dialogue comes from that speaker.

its probably the most important of the 5.1 channels in dolby digital. ALL the dialog comes through that channel which is roughly 80% of the audio on most movies. Do your self the favor and spend the extra cash to get a decent one. You wont regret it...

Sometimes, for kicks, I disable the center channel on my home theater and watch an action flick. Its awesome without speech! My favorite movie without dialog is T2. Just ambience and effects, cool sh!t. Anyway, back on topic. Center channel is the MOST important speaker. Do not skimp on this speaker as all dialog and most movie music will come thru it. Also, make sure you get one that has good bass. Sometimes the DVD has bad LFE coding and a good center will accomodate this.
