if the GPA, GRE ,and the letters of recommendations are strong but the applicant lacks work experience

I was under the impression that the research/work experience is essential for PHD applicants but not Masters

If you have any other weaknesss it might be essential, but if you look really strong otherwise it'll just be a matter of who else applies at the same time as you.

you will lose out to those with strong GREs, GPAs, good recs, and HAS work experience. just depends how many applicants of those type there are.

if you know a professor that you want to research for, and you think he/she wants you also, tlak to them, tell hem youre applying to grad school. even if you dont get in first time, they may pull strings. My prof did!!!

If you have enough experience (research and work experience), then nothing else matters.

If you don't have much experience, then make sure you have positive factors in other areas. You don't need any experience if you have good grades, good recommendations, and good test scores.

depends on what program you're applying for. There are undergrads that jump straight to grad school in my masters program, so i don't think work exp. is absolutely necessary.

This is absolutely true! Make contact (of course, be sure not to make an a55 of yourself when you do).
