How important is it to uninstall old cats before installing the new ones?

On the download page under installation tips, ATI strongly recommends uninstalling your old cats before installing the 3.8's. I have never done that before with a driver upgrade and it seems like a hastle. How necessary is this?

Pretty necessary if you want them to be stable and configured properly.

There is no reason NOT to unistall them. . .

Going from and nVidia -> Ati without a doing a true driver unistall and regclean can leave you with some serious issues..

What's the best way to get rid of the old drivers. Is uninstalling through the Add/Remove menu good enough?

uninstall them, then when it asks to reboot say no

Then use driver cleaner, then reboot, then install new

search for driver cleaner on the forums you will find it

seeing that the control panel has added new features with the 3.8s then uninstalling the old drivers would appear to be even more important!

Get the cat-uninstaller from ATI which removes everything (drivers, CP, WDM, registry) in one fell swoop.
