Is its only major value its pretty color and maleability into decorations/jewelry? Conducive uses seem of a minimal importance in driving costs.

Is human lust for fashion so strong that it is really a solid foundation to fall back on for fiscal securiy?

Shoes and blue jeans seem to be much more sought after and praised for not just their aesthetic value, but their durability and necessary uses. If the world was coming to and end and financial markets totally collapsed, would you rather have a huge stockpile of jeans or shoes to barter with or tons of gold bars?

Ill hang up and listen to your answer

I dont think you realize how much gold is used in electronics.

As a substance with intrinsic value? No it doesnt have any value.

Gold is an amazing metal with tons of useful properties. The heat shielding properties of it make it almost, if not outright, essential for NASA and other space projects I assume.

Aliens started our civilization and programmed us to gather gold for them.

Their civilization was started by other aliens, who programmed them to start more civilizations to gather gold.

Those aliens still don't know why they want all the gold.

Jeans and shoes are much more expensive to produce than paper currency...perhaps jeans and shoes are more valuable? Until further notice, gold is a very valuable commodity and form of currency.

Gold makes a good currency because its both rare and mostly useless. Some one cited electronics and heat shielding on the space shuttle...we've been collecting gold since the beginning of recorded history. I don't think there were a lot of space shuttles or VCRs back then to use it in.

It actually looks hideous as jewelry but since its a sign of wealth we all convince ourselves otherwise. That's why we invented white gold. Silver is much prettier but it isn't as expensive so we take the expensive gold and coat it with silver so the jewelry can look like pretty silver and still cost a whole lot more.

Don't think that's how white gold is made.

Edit:White gold is an alloy of gold and at least one white metal, usually nickel, manganese or palladium.

Its only valuable because it is universally sought after. Every country in the the world loves gold so it is a universal currency.

I always thought things that are valuable solely because they are rare are stupid. Like baseball cards. I just don't get it. If you really think about it a peanut butter and jelly sandwich has more value than the rarest baseball card. It's just a piece of paper with some guy's picture on it.

Gold is valuable because it makes pretty jewelry. Women like jewelry, and men who can give women more jewelry are more sought after by women. The more gold you have, the more beautiful women you can fuck. Hence... value.

gold complements persian skin tones, the greeks learned it from them, and the romans learned it from them.

Person A wants gold because Person B wants gold.
Person B wants gold because Person C wants gold.

Erm, your two statements contradict one another. Gold isn't used in electronics just because it's shiny - it has a purpose.

Basically gold can do anything copper can do but better. So it obviously has intrinsic value - its intrinsic value is at least that of copper's. But no, gold's intrinsic value is no where near that of its current market value.

That's stupid. That's like saying your TV or your credit card or your money have no value, because if the apocalypse occurred you couldn't barter with them.

So, basically, what you're saying is that, once again, it's woman's fault?
