How important is DX9 compatibility?

I need a new card to last about a year and the max I can spend is about $130. So it puts me in the position of the fastest card I can get is a GeForce 4 Ti 4600, but the fastest DX9 card I can probably get is the FX 5600 Ultra or possibly the FX 5700.

So with the new games coming out, should I go for the DX9 capability or the faster card?

I know I been asking a lot of questions of late, but this damn video market has become rocket science....Thanks for bearing with me.

A faster dx8 gpu is generally better than a slow dx9 gpu. For example, you'd be better off with a ti4200 instead of a fx5200. For around $130, you can probably find a 9600 pro. With aa/af off it should only be slightly slower than a ti4600 in most games. In some games it would even be faster. I might also take a 5600 ultra rev 2 or a 5700 over a 4600.

DX9 is going to be very very important. Save up for the 5700.

Take a look at Doom3 for example. It takes two or three passes to render most stuff, while on DX9 level hardware it only takes a single pass. Sure, the 4600 seems pretty nice in old games, but in new games, which I assume are why you want to upgrade, the 5700 will be much quicker. And have better graphics.

The 4600 will probably last a year, but the 5700 will last longer by giving you better graphics and probably better performance.

9600pro would be alright and if you can sell some plasma to get another $30 you can get a Nvidia 5900 if you look around.

DirectX 9.0 compatibility is a compulsory must-have. OTOH DirectX 9.0 compliance depends on what games you play and plan to play in the future.
