How important is ATX form factor? Could I build a cube-shaped case?

Just an idea I've been toying with, something to do during an upcoming vacation. I wanted to make a Lexan case, but I was thinking more along the lines of a cube (Call me crazy, I just don't like tower shapes). Assuming I plan sufficiently that I don't have my power source and motherboard in the same space, etc., is there any reason not to do this?

Also, if anyone has any suggestions on freeware/shareware programs that might help me with a little elementary CAD so's I can get plans together, I would be ever so appreciative.
