How important is an Amd Approved PSU?

Would a generic 300 watt work as well as an Amd approved?

going into a
1.2gig Tbird
ddr mobo
1 cdrom
1 cdwriter
1 40 gig maxtor

also, would a 250 watt generic power supply work by chance?

the generic one should work, but i would recommend getting a high quality one such as an enermax because you can never be too careful about psu's...the generic one may cause problems with stability

The 250W may work. A friend of mine runs a 1.1GHz T-Bird off a 250W somehow. But I wouldn't risk it, go for a 300W. As for getting an AMD approved one, that's really up to you. If the generic one works fine then by all means stick with it. If your system is unstable then maybe try and AMD approved one.

Important enough that AMD themselves took the time to test thousands of different ones and only approved a small handful. Wouldn't you think it's important? You're gonna spend anywhere from $500 to $2000 on all these beautiful, state-of-the-art parts, and then cheap-out on the one thing in the entire system that can fry them? Duh, da-duh, duh, duhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Antec/Enermax/Sparkle are all well-known and approved. Get one. 🙂

How is AMD approved so important? Enermax isn't AMD approved, and who reports bad stuff about enermax? The iwill kk266 mobo isnt amd approved, yet it's probably the favorite kt133a motherboard around in the forums.

like the others said, its kinda like "insurance"

with generic ones--> not enermax

you can run into problems with stability and other things... like mike said, if you are going to spend tons of money on your system, why put a garbadge PSU in! 😉!

Ah, good point. But there's a Big Difference b/t an Enermax 300W PS and a "JoeBlowHouseBrand" 300W ps. Enermax is a well-known and respected name in the PS biz. I'm sure they are on the Approved page somewhere.

I ended up with an FMI 400w ps (CompUSA brand) that works better than fine for my system. Also, it was $40 cheaper than the Antec 400w.

Wow, all of a sudden there is a flood of responses. Just to set things straight, this wasn't for my system. I went with an amd approved psu when I went with AMD. My friend said if she has to get a new case, she wants a hot pink one so her computer "sticks out" from the others. The case came with a generic 250 watt that could be upgraded to a generic 300 watt. I will pass the word along to upgrade to an Amd approved.

thanks for all the help fellas

I *hate* it when people say "Gig" instead of "GHz". PLEASE don't do that!
It's like saying HARD DRIVER or VID CARD.

Thank you.

wow picky picky

I didn't mention the vid card in the original thread because I don't know what type of vid card it is. It is a 7200 rpm hard driver though. Overall, its a nice 1.2 gig system though. Thanks for power supply help.
