How important are updated video drivers for older GPUs?

I've got a GTX760 in my HTPC, with the updated NVidia driver (355.82) I started having BSODs under LinX testing, so I reverted back to the previous driver (.60) and that seemed to fix it. But that got me to thinking...

In older setups (B75 chipset, Windows 7, GTX7xx GPU, for example) how important is an updated video driver? After reading the descriptions on some of the updates, they largely address optimizations for games.

Another example would be my GAME rig in my sig below... a Z68 chipset with a current GTX970... but... the most modern game I have is Modern Warfare 4. Do I need to keep updating the drivers there?

I'd say it is a good idea to try and update but always be prepared to revert to a known working driver. The situation is even worse on mobile chips.

The 6670 in my Dell at work started giving me a bunch of "driver restarted" errors in Windows 8.1 this month. Updating to newer drivers has helped so far.

cen1's advice is good. Update when you want to or need to but be prepared to roll back.

I still update my 680 drivers but mainly because I'm running SLI and need the latest SLI profiles. If I only had one, I wouldn't be updating drivers unless I was either having issues or there were specific improvements for my card in the release notes.
